Former Republican political consultant Stuart Stevens claimed Tuesday that supporters of former President Donald Trump would set fire to voting locations to help the Republican presidential nominee win.
Trump trails Vice President Kamala Harris by 1.4% in the RealClearPolling average of polls conducted from Sept. 30 to Oct. 13. Stevens warned that Republicans wanted to “violently disrupt” the vote count, particularly out of fear of black voters, and that Americans should anticipate that there will be issues from Trump supporters in certifying the election. “Look, this is 100% about race. Let’s don’t pretend it’s anything else. It has been from the beginning. Where are all these suspect votes? Detroit, Philadelphia, Atlanta. What do they have in common? High percentage of African American voters,” Stevens told MSNBC host Chris Jansing. “Those that voted not to certify those elections were basically trying to disenfranchise millions and millions of black voters. It’s that simple.”

“You know, they can’t stop blacks from voting anymore the way they did in the ’60s with the same kind of success, though with these voter challenges they’re going to try,” Stevens continued. “And I think what is really to fear here is, put yourself in the mindset that the Trump campaign really doesn’t think it can win, either the popular vote or Electoral College. You look at this campaign, it makes no sense. He’s not trying to add voters. What they want to do is they want to win the election night until the inauguration. And if they can go in and they can violently disrupt these counting centers, how will states be able to certify elections? You burn down a county center in Arizona, how does the governor certify those elections? What world are we in then? And I think that we really have to anticipate that, think about it.”
Trump has gained support among both black and Hispanic voters leading up the November election, largely due to their support of the former president’s economic and immigration policies, compared to past elections. Harris has the support of 56% of likely Hispanic voters compared to 37% who support Trump in a head-to-head matchup, six points less for Harris than what President Joe Biden received in 2020, a New York Times/Siena College poll released Sunday shows.
The former president garnered 12% support from black voters in the 2020 election, according to a CNN exit poll, and has exceeded that level of support in some recent general election surveys, including an August poll by CBS, which showed the former president getting 17% of black voters, and Fox News, which indicated 26% of black voters backed the former president. A CNN poll released in late September showed Harris leading Trump by 55% among black voters under the age of 60, compared to a 71% margin for President Joe Biden in 2020.
