Dem Rep Raskin Is Freaking Out Over Donald Trump’s Presidential Transition Plans

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has expressed concerns over the Trump campaign’s decision not to engage in presidential transition agreements with the federal government ahead of the 2024 election.

WASHINGTON, DC – February 2, 2023: Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) speaks to reporters outside the U.S. Capitol after the vote to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

In a letter addressed to former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), Raskin criticized the campaign’s refusal to commit to the transition process, which he says could have negative implications for the peaceful transfer of power.

Raskin, who serves as the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, warned in his letter that rejecting these agreements breaks with precedent.

He wrote, “Breaking the precedent set by every other presidential candidate since 2010, you have rejected these resources and refused to commit to a smooth transition.” He further accused Trump of demonstrating “a spectacular disregard for the successful continuation of the essential institutions of American democratic government.”

Raskin’s letter raises questions about the potential impact on the transition of power, should Trump win the 2024 election. Transition agreements, established by the Presidential Transition Act, are intended to ensure the incoming administration is prepared to take over key responsibilities.

As of now, there has been no indication from the Trump-Vance team about when or if they plan to sign transition agreements.

Raskin’s concerns come as Trump remains a leading candidate, polling ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris in several key states.

While Raskin focuses on the importance of a seamless transition, there are broader questions about the state of the race.

Trump’s strong position in the polls suggests a level of confidence in his campaign, raising speculation about the outcome of the election.

Some observers have noted that Raskin’s letter might reflect growing concerns within the Democratic Party about the prospects of a Trump victory.

Raskin, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, has previously pushed for reforms to the electoral system, including advocating for the elimination of the Electoral College and the adoption of ranked-choice voting.

His efforts to challenge what he sees as outdated norms in the electoral process contrast with his current concerns over the Trump campaign’s disregard for traditional transition procedures.

As the election nears, it remains unclear how the Trump team plans to handle the transition process if they win.

The Harris campaign, which has not been mentioned in relation to the transition agreements, has yet to comment on its own preparations.

The focus on transition procedures may grow in the coming weeks, but for now, both campaigns are fully engaged in their election efforts.

While Raskin raises alarms, it’s clear that the Trump-Vance team is prioritizing their campaign strategy over administrative logistics at this point.
