On Thursday night, Washington, D.C. was thrown into a state of uncertainty after several residents reported spotting mysterious lights hovering above the U.S. Capitol building.

The unusual phenomenon, which was captured in photographs and videos, sparked widespread speculation online, especially in the wake of a recent congressional hearing on UFOs, now referred to as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs).

The sighting, which began with four bright lights hovering in the sky above the Capitol, quickly turned into a viral event as a fifth light appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

Dennis Diggins, an Air Force veteran and licensed tour guide, shared a striking image of the event from the steps of the Capitol, which showed the lights hovering above the building.

A video taken from a greater distance later showed the same lights, with two of the lights separating from the group and a fifth light appearing abruptly.

This unusual spectacle led to a flurry of activity online, with users speculating on the nature of the lights.

While many initially wondered if the lights were related to the recent hearings on UAPs, others were quick to point out potential explanations.

A viewer who claimed to work in the area suggested that the lights could have been flights lined up for Reagan National Airport (DCA) along with a helicopter.

However, others were skeptical, replying that planes and helicopters do not simply “materialize” in such a fashion.

The discussion quickly evolved into a “UFO panic,” with some users making light of the situation. “I’ve got a lot going on,” one meme humorously said, while another quipped, “The aliens came to see how the political circus is made live and direct.”

The location of the lights above the Capitol Building, which sits within one of the most secure airspaces in the world, also raised questions.

Some users expressed concern over how such phenomena could appear without any military intervention. “These pop in and out. This is the most secure airspace in the world. Things get shot down. Why aren’t these?” one user asked, pointing to the seemingly unimpeded presence of the lights.

Others speculated that the lights could be a result of “geopolitical tensions” or even “cosmic rays,” highlighting the growing curiosity about the mystery.

One user suggested that drones might be the cause of the spectacle, a theory that has gained traction in recent years given the increasing use of drones for various activities.

However, she added that the size and height of the lights in this particular instance seemed far larger and more prominent than typical drones. “I’ve seen these in OKC multiple times. They are not airplanes. I thought they were stars at first until I noticed the red and green lights. They could be drones, but seem to be much bigger and higher than normal ones to me,” she commented.

John Greenewald, Jr., a prominent ufologist, weighed in on the phenomenon, offering a possible explanation that many found dismissive.

Greenewald suggested that the lights were likely just lens flares from the Capitol building’s lights, a recurring occurrence that has sparked similar “UFO sightings” in the past. “The lights at the U.S. Capitol building have been causing ‘UFO sightings’ in the camera lens for decades,” Greenewald wrote on X. “(Just lens flares, but interesting someone is passing them around, again, and more so interesting people are buying it. New photo, same lens flare ‘phenomenon’.)”

Despite Greenewald’s more grounded explanation, the timing of the sighting, coupled with the government’s recent UAP hearings, has left many wondering about the nature of the lights.

The hearings, which saw witnesses testify that the government has been in contact with non-human entities and pressuring whistleblowers to stay silent, have added an air of mystery to the events.

The Pentagon’s March report, which stated that there was no evidence of extraterrestrial spacecraft, adds another layer of intrigue as the debate over UAPs continues.

While the true cause of the lights remains unclear, the event has rekindled public interest in the UAP phenomenon, especially after the recent congressional hearings.

The incident is another chapter in the ongoing mystery surrounding UFOs and the government’s role in addressing them, leaving many to wonder if the truth is finally coming to light.
