The nomination was revealed shortly before Trump also named Kash Patel as his pick to replace Christopher Wray as FBI director.
“For over 32 years, Sheriff Chad Chronister has served the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and received countless commendations and awards for keeping his community SAFE,” Trump wrote in a statement on Truth Social.
Chronister has an extensive background in law enforcement and community service. A graduate of the FBI National Academy’s 260th Session, he currently holds several leadership roles, including:
- Co-Chairman of the Regional Domestic Security Task Force for Region IV Tampa Bay
- Council Member of the Florida Attorney General’s Statewide Council on Human Trafficking
- Chairman of the Criminal Justice Sub-Committee
- Vice-Chairman of the Hillsborough County Public Safety Coordinating Council
- Vice-Chairman of the Hillsborough County Public Schools Citizen Oversight Committee
Trump emphasized Chronister’s qualifications, stating that the sheriff is well-prepared to take on the challenges of combating the nation’s drug crisis.
In his announcement, Trump outlined key objectives for Chronister’s tenure at the DEA, emphasizing collaboration with Pam Bondi, Trump’s nominee for attorney general following Rep. Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from consideration.
Trump stated that Chronister and Bondi would work to “secure the Border, stop the flow of Fentanyl and other Illegal Drugs across the Southern Border, and SAVE LIVES.”
The president-elect also extended congratulations to Chronister’s family, saying, “Congratulations to Chad, his wife Nikki, and two wonderful sons!”
Chronister responded to the nomination with gratitude, calling it the “honor of a lifetime” in a statement posted to social media.
“I am deeply humbled by this opportunity to serve our nation,” he said, pledging to bring his decades of experience to the national stage in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

Appointed as Hillsborough County Sheriff in 2017 by then-Florida Governor Rick Scott, Chronister has since been re-elected twice, solidifying his reputation as a capable and dedicated law enforcement leader.
Under his leadership, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has focused on community engagement, public safety, and combatting organized crime.
His extensive experience in addressing domestic security and human trafficking issues positions him as a strong candidate to lead the DEA.
If confirmed, Chronister will take on the role at a time when the DEA faces significant challenges, including the ongoing fentanyl crisis and the proliferation of illegal drug trafficking across the southern border.
His nomination signals Trump’s continued focus on prioritizing border security and law enforcement in his administration’s agenda.
