MSNBC host Joy Reid has once again targeted President-elect Donald Trump in an over-the-top segment on her show, claiming Trump is serious about annexing Canada based on a satirical meme he shared on social media.
The commentary, aired earlier this week, drew widespread criticism and highlighted Reid’s ongoing fixation with the president-elect.
In her latest broadcast, Reid reacted to a series of reports involving Trump’s recent activities, including his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago.

The meeting reportedly focused on trade negotiations, with Trump warning of a potential 25% tariff on Canadian goods.
During the discussion, Trump jokingly suggested that if Canada could not handle the tariffs, it could simply become the 51st U.S. state, with Trudeau serving as governor.

Reid appeared to take the joke at face value, expressing alarm over the remark and pointing to an AI-generated image Trump posted shortly after.

The image depicted Trump standing on a mountain next to a Canadian flag, captioned “Oh, Canada!”
Critics of Reid were quick to note that the image was clearly meant as humor, but the MSNBC host treated it as evidence of Trump’s alleged authoritarian tendencies.
According to Reid, Trump’s lighthearted suggestion revealed a broader “global far-right surge” that she claims includes Trump’s leadership style.
She described the president-elect as a “local gangster” and accused him of threatening foreign governments with tariffs, undermining international diplomacy, and even contemplating military action against Mexico.
“Donald Trump isn’t even president yet, but he’s already sitting in Mar-a-Lago, acting like some mob boss with a social media site,” Reid said during her broadcast.
She added that his demands, including the release of hostages held in Gaza, were part of his “strongman” approach to foreign policy.
Reid also characterized Trump’s joking reference to annexing Canada as a reflection of his ambitions, stating, “Just become the 51st state? That’s not leadership—it’s absurdity.”

The broadcast comes at a time when MSNBC has been grappling with declining viewership.
Reid’s segment follows recent comments from tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who joked about buying the network to improve its ratings.
Critics have pointed out that Reid’s increasingly hyperbolic takes on Trump may be alienating audiences rather than engaging them.
Meanwhile, Trump’s trade discussions with Trudeau appear to have been focused on serious economic matters.
The proposed tariffs are part of Trump’s broader effort to renegotiate trade agreements and ensure favorable terms for the U.S., according to sources familiar with the meeting.
The incident has reignited debate over the role of political commentary in media and the importance of discerning satire from serious policy proposals.
As Trump prepares to assume office in January, his relationship with the media—particularly outlets like MSNBC—remains as contentious as ever.
