President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to be his surgeon general, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, indirectly killed her father as a teenager in a freak accident which inspired her medical career, The New York Times reported.

In February 1990, a 13-year-old Nesheiwat unintentionally knocked over her father’s fishing tackle box from a shelf above his bed as he slept to retrieve a pair of scissors, The New York Times reported Friday. The unexpected motion set off a firearm inside the box and resulted in the Umatilla, Florida tragedy which changed the course of her life forever.

“Something fell out of it and there was a loud noise,” Nesheiwat reportedly told police at the time. “I saw blood on my father’s ear.”

Police called the .380-caliber handgun’s accidental discharge a “freak accident,” a local newspaper said at the time, according to The New York Times.

Although Nesheiwat references her father’s death in her upcoming memoir, “Beyond the Stethoscope: Miracles in Medicine,” she did not mention her tragic role in the incident, the outlet reported.

“When I was 13 years old, I helplessly watched my dear father dying from an accident as blood was spurting everywhere,” she writes at the start of her 260-page book. “I couldn’t save his life.”

In another excerpt published by The New York Times, Nesheiwat addressed how her father’s death bore her desire to help others as a medical doctor.

“This was the start of my personal journey in life to become a physician and enter the world of healing arts.” (RELATED: ‘Not A Leader’: Trump’s Surgeon General Pick Has Uphill Climb To Earning Trust Of MAGA Voters)

In her memoir, Nesheiwat does reveal her father, Ben Nesheiwat, was shot, according to the outlet. A Feb. 25, 1990 report by The Orlando Sentinel detailed how the victim was struck by a single bullet, according to The New York Times. He was reportedly declared dead the next day at a hospital in Orlando.

Nesheiwat desperately tried to save her dad with towels and ice before calling 911, a police report obtained by the outlet said.

“I was in Father’s bedroom at about 7:15 a.m. getting some scissors,” she reportedly said when she called the police. “I opened the fishing tackle box and the whole thing tipped over.”

Upon arrival, police reportedly found Nesheiwat’s dying father lying on top of sheets with crossed arms and a wounded head surrounded by pillows. One officer described the incident as an “accidental shooting” in his report, according to the outlet.

“As she says in her book, she became a physician because of her dad’s tragic accidental death,” Trump transition spokesman Brian Hughes told the outlet. “She became as a physician to save lives, and that dedication to the lives of her fellow Americans is why President Trump nominated Dr. Nesheiwat to be our next Surgeon General. She as her family miss their father, and hope he’s proud of them.”
