On Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump responded to the announcement of the resignation of FBI Director Christopher Wray, framing it as a turning point in ending what he described as the political weaponization of federal institutions.

Trump previously introduced Kash Patel as his nominee to replace Wray, signaling a significant shift in leadership at the FBI.

Former chief of staff for the Secretary of Defense Kash Patel speaks during a campaign stop in support of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Trump Force 47 Headquarters in Green Bay, Wis.

Wray’s resignation came amid expectations that Trump would have dismissed him if he did not step down.

The announcement marks the culmination of long-standing tensions between Trump and Wray, who was appointed to the position during Trump’s first term.

In a statement, Trump expressed optimism about the future of the FBI under new leadership. “The resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice,” Trump said. “I just don’t know what happened to him. We will now restore the Rule of Law for all Americans.”

During his tenure, Wray faced criticism from Trump over controversies involving the FBI’s handling of investigations into conservatives and allegations of bias within the agency.

Trump pointed to specific incidents, including the raid on his home and what he characterized as efforts to undermine his presidency.

“Under the leadership of Christopher Wray, the FBI illegally raided my home, without cause, worked diligently on illegally impeaching and indicting me, and has done everything else to interfere with the success and future of America,” Trump stated.

“They have used their vast powers to threaten and destroy many innocent Americans, some of which will never be able to recover from what has been done to them.”

Trump expressed confidence in Patel’s qualifications to lead the agency, highlighting his commitment to restoring public trust and fairness within the FBI. “Kash Patel is the most qualified Nominee to lead the FBI in the Agency’s History, and is committed to helping ensure that Law, Order, and Justice will be brought back to our Country again, and soon,” Trump said.

Acknowledging the support of FBI rank-and-file employees, Trump added, “As everyone knows, I have great respect for the rank-and-file of the FBI, and they have great respect for me. They want to see these changes every bit as much as I do but, more importantly, the American People are demanding a strong, but fair, System of Justice.”

Trump concluded by emphasizing the importance of Patel’s confirmation, signaling his belief that the changes in leadership will set the FBI on a new course.

“We want our FBI back, and that will now happen. I look forward to Kash Patel’s confirmation, so that the process of Making the FBI Great Again can begin. Thank you!”

The nomination of Kash Patel now moves to the Senate, where confirmation hearings are expected in the coming weeks.

As Trump prepares to take office, the leadership changes at the FBI are poised to play a central role in his administration’s efforts to reshape the federal justice system.
