Denzel Washington, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, has embraced a new chapter in his life—stepping into the ministry.

As Fox News reported, on December 21, the 69-year-old star of Gladiator II received his minister’s license during a baptism ceremony at the historic Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in New York City.

The event marked a deeply personal milestone for Washington, whose faith journey has been as profound as his career.

“It took a while, but I’m finally here,” Washington shared during the service, as recounted by Archbishop Christopher Bryant.

“If He can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit.”

Bryant celebrated the occasion on Facebook, posting photos of Washington’s baptism and ministerial licensing, which he described as “a truly uplifting moment.”

Washington’s connection to Kelly Temple runs deep. He attended the church as a child and later testified about being filled with the Holy Spirit after visiting another congregation with fellow actor Robert Townsend in the 1980s.

According to Bryant, the actor’s baptism and licensing were not only spiritual milestones but also a return to his roots.

The Oscar-winning actor’s public embrace of faith stands in stark contrast to the culture of Hollywood, which he criticizes for its reluctance to discuss religion.

In an interview with Esquire, Washington revealed the challenges of openly talking about faith in the entertainment industry.

“When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I’ve been given by my Lord and Savior,” he said.

“I’m unafraid. I don’t care what anyone thinks. See, talking about the fear part of it – you can’t talk like that and win Oscars. You can’t talk like that and party. You can’t say that in this town.”

Washington further elaborated on Hollywood’s dismissive attitude toward religion.

“I’m free now. It’s not talked about in this town. It’s not talked about. It’s not talked about. It’s not fashionable. It’s not sexy. But that doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe. There’s no such thing called Hollywood anyway. What does that even mean? That to me means a street called Hollywood Boulevard.”

Despite the pressures of the industry, Washington remains steadfast in his beliefs. “I’m free now,” he said, rejecting the notion that fame should overshadow faith.

From his breakthrough role on St. Elsewhere in 1982 to iconic performances in films like Training Day, Malcolm X, and The Book of Eli, Washington has long been a commanding presence on screen.

Now, he brings that same dedication to his ministry, proving that his faith is as unwavering as his career.
