MSNBC panelist and Futuro Media founder Maria Hinojosa stated on Friday that Americans perceive the economy as struggling under Joe Biden due to the influence of repeated negative narratives, despite economists claiming otherwise.

Speaking on The ReidOut, Hinojosa addressed voter concerns about economic conditions and their impact on the 2024 presidential election, during which President-elect Donald Trump emphasized the economy as a key issue.

Hinojosa was asked if she believed Americans prioritized concerns like “the price of eggs” over issues such as the “fragility of democracy.”

She cited her discussions with economists, asserting that the Biden-Harris administration’s economic performance has been strong, but public perception has been shaped by rhetoric suggesting otherwise.

“In my reporting all of last year, what became clear, right, was that it was about the economy, the economy, the economy,” Hinojosa said.

“Speaking with economists over last year, they were like, this is a great economy, but people are believing the narrative that they’re being told that, ‘This is a disastrous economy.’”

During his 2024 campaign, Trump consistently pledged to restore economic stability and address rising prices, which were top concerns for many voters heading to the polls in November.

Data from a May 2024 ABC News/Ipsos poll revealed that more than 80% of voters identified the economy and inflation as crucial factors in their decision-making.

Additionally, 70% of respondents described the country’s economic conditions as poor, with 53% dissatisfied with their personal financial situation.

Hinojosa expressed skepticism about Trump’s ability to meet voter expectations, suggesting that promises to fix economic issues, including lowering the cost of goods, may face scrutiny.

“People are expecting because they have believed this rhetoric of, ‘I’m going to take care of everything, and I will lower the price of eggs,’” she said.

Despite voter concerns, Biden defended his administration’s economic record in a May 2024 interview with CNN.

He disputed claims of poor performance and argued that polling data failed to reflect reality. “We’ve already turned it around … the polling data has been wrong all along,” Biden said. “They think the nation’s not in good shape, but they’re personally in good shape.”

However, dissatisfaction among Americans persisted, as polls showed a disconnect between Biden’s statements and public sentiment about the economy.

Following Trump’s victory in November, a CBS News/YouGov poll indicated a more optimistic outlook among voters.

The survey found that 50% of respondents believed America’s best days are ahead, compared to 39% who said the best days are in the past, and 11% who felt they are occurring now.

As Trump prepares to take office in January, his administration faces the challenge of addressing economic concerns that played a significant role in his return to the White House.

Meanwhile, the narrative surrounding economic conditions under Biden’s presidency continues to be a point of contention, highlighting the influence of public perception on national discourse.
