House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed sharp criticism of President Joe Biden’s decision to pause liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Europe, arguing it undermined U.S. allies and inadvertently bolstered Vladimir Putin’s war efforts.
In an interview with The Free Press’s Bari Weiss, Johnson detailed his Oval Office meeting with Biden, recounting what he described as a concerning lack of awareness from the President about a critical executive order he had signed.
Johnson, who became Speaker of the House in October 2023, explained the challenges he faced in securing a meeting with Biden amid significant national security concerns.

“I started requesting a meeting with the President… but they wouldn’t let me meet with him,” Johnson said. “His staff kept giving excuses… This went on for like, eight or nine weeks.”
After publicly criticizing the lack of communication, Johnson was finally invited to the White House in January 2024.
However, he described the meeting as a setup. “I show up, and I realize it’s actually an ambush… it’s not just me and the President; it’s Kamala Harris, Chuck Schumer, Hakeem [Jeffries], the CIA director, everybody,” Johnson recounted. “They were going to hotbox the Speaker on Ukraine funding.”
The meeting took an unexpected turn when Biden cleared the room, leaving Johnson and himself alone in the Oval Office.
“The President reaches over… and he says, ‘The Speaker and I just need a couple of minutes together. Would you all just leave us alone?’” Johnson said, describing the moment as an unexpected assertion of authority.
During their private conversation, Johnson directly questioned Biden about the pause on LNG exports to Europe.
“I said, Mr. President… why did you pause LNG exports to Europe? Liquefied natural gas is in great demand by our allies. Why would you do that? You understand… you’re fueling Vladimir Putin’s war machine because they’ve got to get their gas from him,” Johnson recounted.
Johnson described Biden’s initial reaction as one of surprise.
“He looks at me, stunned… and he said, ‘I didn’t do that.’” Despite Johnson pointing out the executive order, Biden appeared unaware of the implications of his action. “It occurred to me… he was not lying to me. He genuinely did not know what he had signed,” Johnson said.
Biden eventually acknowledged the executive order, framing it as a study on the effects of LNG exports. Johnson countered, explaining the real-world impact on Louisiana’s economy and national security.
“This is doing massive damage… It occurred to me we’re in serious trouble. Who is running the country?” Johnson said.
Johnson’s account has raised questions about presidential oversight and decision-making. He concluded the interview with a sobering observation: “It’s been very, very concerning to me over the last year and a half… I kind of feel sorry for Joe Biden. He is not, obviously, has not been in charge for some time. And now the whole world knows it.”

The incident adds to growing scrutiny of the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of national security and energy policies, particularly in the context of U.S. relations with European allies and the conflict in Ukraine.
Johnson’s remarks highlight Republican concerns about the President’s leadership and the potential impact on global stability.
