The incident occurred on January 20 near the U.S.-Canadian border.
Vermont State Police initially reported the shooting in Coventry, a small town located near the border.
The shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. local time on Interstate 91, prompting a temporary closure of the highway in both directions.

Federal officials later confirmed the death of the agent.
“On January 20, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the US Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector was fatally shot in the line of duty,” stated Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in a press release shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“The incident is currently being investigated, and CBP will release additional information as soon as it becomes available.”
The CBP agent’s death coincided with the inauguration of President Donald Trump, who took office the same day.
President Trump signed several executive orders addressing immigration and border security, including measures to declare a national emergency at the southern border, designate cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, pause refugee resettlement, and end birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants.

In response to the agent’s death, acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman expressed his condolences.
“Every single day, our Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm’s way so that Americans and our homeland are safe and secure,” Huffman said.
“My prayers and deepest condolences are with our Department, the Agent’s family, loved ones, and colleagues.”
As of now, neither the CBP nor Vermont State Police have released further details about the agent’s identity or any suspects involved in the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing, and federal authorities have promised updates as more information becomes available.
