In a recent press conference, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson staunchly defended President Donald Trump’s executive actions on immigration while sharply criticizing Joe Biden’s last-minute pardons for his family members.

When questioned about the plight of refugees from Afghanistan who have been barred from travel, Johnson emphasized Trump’s commitment to a policy reset.

“Well, what the President is trying to do right now is a reset, and I don’t second guess his decisions on that. He’s using his executive authority, because desperate times call for desperate measures,” Johnson stated.

He highlighted the legislative role of Congress in addressing these issues, particularly the overwhelming human catastrophe at the border.

“Obviously, the wide-open border has created an indescribable human catastrophe for us that we will be dealing with for decades,” he said, adding that the American public supports Trump’s agenda, citing a New York Times poll where 87% of Americans agreed with deporting criminal illegal aliens.

“This is again, common sense. So I think the people are behind the President and his agenda and his priorities, and he’s going to make those decisions, and we’re going to do our part, and we are going to work together very closely to address all of it.”

The conversation then shifted to Biden’s recent actions.

A reporter asked about potential congressional action regarding the pardons issued by Biden in his final days in office.

Johnson was direct in his criticism, calling the move “shocking” and unprecedented. “It was shocking what President Biden did on the way out, pardoning his family for more than a decade of whatever activity, any non-violent offenses it was, it was breathtaking to us. I don’t think that’s anything like that’s ever been anticipated,” he remarked.

He contrasted this with the reaction four years prior when Trump was rumored to consider similar actions, referencing statements from Biden, Schiff, and Schumer.

“And by the way, go look at the tape. You know, four years ago, when it was just implied that President Trump might do something similar, they were apoplectic. Joe Biden himself, Adam Schiff, Chuck Schumer, roll the tape. They all said that would be crazy and unconscionable and now they’re cheering it along. It’s to us. It is disgusting to us. It probably proves the point, the suspicion that, you know, they call it the Biden crime family, if they weren’t the crime family, why do they need pardons? Right?”

Johnson questioned the rationale behind the pardons, suggesting that such actions merit further scrutiny.

“Look, there’s a lot of attention that’s going to be paid to this, and I think that is appropriate, and we will be looking at it as well.”

Johnson’s statements reflect a clear division in approach to immigration and executive power between the current and former administrations, emphasizing public support for Trump’s policies and a call for accountability regarding Biden’s actions.
