Longtime NBC News anchor Chuck Todd announced Friday that he is leaving the network after nearly 20 years.
Todd, who previously hosted Meet the Press, stated that he will be pursuing new ventures while continuing his political reporting through his podcast, ChuckToddcast.

Todd began his career at NBC News in 2007 as a political director and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming chief White House correspondent in 2008.
In 2014, he took over as host of Meet the Press, where he remained until stepping down in September 2023.
“There’s never a perfect time to leave a place that’s been a professional home for so long, but I’m pretty excited about a few new projects that are on the cusp of going from ‘pie in the sky’ to ‘near reality,’” Todd said in a memo to NBC staff.
He confirmed that his podcast would continue despite his departure from the network.
“The ChuckToddcast is also coming with me (thank you NBC). Stay tuned for an announcement about its new home soon,” Todd wrote.
“Needless to say, I do plan to continue to share my reporting and unique perspective of covering politics with data and history as important baselines in understanding where we were, where we are, and where we’re going.”

In his farewell memo, Todd acknowledged the declining trust in mainstream media, calling for a shift in how the industry approaches journalism.
“The media has a lot of work to do to win back the trust of viewers/listeners/readers and I’m convinced the best place to start is from the bottom up,” Todd wrote.
He suggested that the media should focus less on social media algorithms and more on local journalism partnerships to regain credibility.
“The only way to fix this information ecosystem is to stop whining about the various ways the social media companies are manipulating things and instead roll up our collective sleeves and start with local,” he stated.
“National media can’t win trust back without having a robust partner locally and trying to game algorithms is no way to inform and report.”

NBC News thanked Todd for his contributions in a statement following his announcement.
“We’re grateful for Chuck’s many contributions to our political coverage during his nearly two-decade career at NBC News and for his deep commitment to Meet the Press and its enduring legacy,” the network said, according to Variety.
“We wish him all the best in his next endeavors.”
Todd stepped down from Meet the Press in September 2023, passing the role to Kristen Welker.
During his time at NBC, Todd expanded Meet the Press into podcasting and even launched a film festival aimed at engaging younger audiences.
Todd was among several NBC staffers who opposed the hiring of former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor earlier this year.
His stance was part of internal resistance that led NBC to cut ties with McDaniel just two days after her debut on Meet the Press.
However, during his tenure, Todd gave credibility to the now-debunked Trump-Russia collusion allegations, while later claiming that allegations of election irregularities in 2020 were baseless.
In January 2019, Todd also made headlines when he banned climate change skeptics from appearing on Meet the Press, stating he would not allow debate on the issue.
Todd’s exit comes as several veteran media figures leave their networks.
Earlier this week, CNN’s Jim Acosta announced his departure after nearly two decades at the network.

Acosta reportedly left after being asked to move to a midnight time slot.
As Todd moves forward with his independent projects, it remains to be seen whether his shift away from network television will resonate with audiences at a time when legacy media outlets face increasing skepticism.
