Two reckless thrill-seekers narrowly escaped disaster after triggering a massive avalanche while skiing off-piste in Italy’s South Tyrol region.

The jaw-dropping moment was captured on video, showing the duo carving their way down a steep, snow-covered slope in Val Venosta—only to be chased by a rapidly accelerating wall of snow, as reported by The Daily Mail.

New Year’s Eve brought sunny skies and mountain views at Hoodoo Ski Area on Dec. 31, 2024.

As they zigzagged their way down the mountain, disaster seemed imminent when the avalanche caught up to them. The skiers disappeared momentarily into the cloud of rushing snow, but miraculously, they managed to make it out unscathed.

The snow finally came to a halt at the “Des Alpes” chairlift, sparing any potential casualties. However, their reckless decision to ski off-piste—outside designated and maintained slopes—has drawn the attention of Italian authorities, who are now working to track them down.

Reports indicate they could face criminal charges.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, and it wasn’t the only avalanche to hit the region. Just a day later, multiple avalanches were reported at various ski resorts, further underscoring the dangers of ignoring safety protocols in high-risk areas.

One such avalanche struck the Colle del Gigante area on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, where a 50-year-old German skier, also skiing off-piste, was swept away by the snow.

Thankfully, he survived without major injuries and was transported to the emergency room at Parini Hospital in Aosta for further evaluation and treatment.

Later that same day, near Passo Venegiota in the Belluno region, a group of eight French ski mountaineers encountered another avalanche. One of them, a 30-year-old man, was carried approximately 400 meters (1,300 feet) by the powerful rush of snow.

He was rescued and taken to Belluno Hospital, but his condition is stable, and his life is not in danger.

These back-to-back incidents have reignited concerns about the increasing number of reckless skiers who ignore safety warnings, endangering not only themselves but also rescue teams and innocent bystanders.

Children from metro Detroit make their way across the snow during their ski lesson at Mt. Brighton Ski Resort in Brighton, on Sunday, January 27, 2025, as part of the Epic for Everyone program hosted by Detroit-based Jim Dandy Ski Club. The program in its 4th year is funded by a grant from Vail Resorts aims to give children ages 10-18 years-old from underrepresented communities the chance to learn to ski and snowboard while providing the equipment and lessons to do so.

Italian authorities are now doubling down on enforcement against off-piste skiing in high-risk areas, making it clear that those who disregard safety measures will be held accountable.
