Kash Patel is a pretty pro-gun guy, from all outward appearances. Those who know him that I’ve spoken with tell me it’s not just outwardly, either. That’s good since he’s shaping up to be the next director of the FBI, which should be entertaining, to say the least.
Senate Democrats, though, aren’t nearly as thrilled by the possibility. They don’t like Patel and they’re ready to do whatever they can to try and scuttle his confirmation.
It’s not working, but they’re trying.
In what might be the most pathetic effort, one senator tried to make the Gun Owners of America’s support for him an issue.
Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., grilled Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the FBI, over Patel’s pro-gun stances.
Asked by Padilla whether Patel believes background checks on firearm purchases are constitutional during the nominee’s confirmation hearing Thursday, Patel responded that he didn’t know “the in-depths of it,” but believed “that’s what the Supreme Court said.”
“Do you think civilian ownership of machine guns is protected by the Second Amendment?” Padilla fired back.
“Whatever the courts rule in regards to the Second Amendment is what is protected by the Second Amendment,” Patel responded.
Padilla explained that his line of questioning was due to an “association” between Patel and the group Gun Owners of America, which enthusiastically endorsed Trump’s choice to lead the FBI.
“GOA Applauds Nomination of ‘Fiercely Pro-Gun’ Kash Patel for FBI Director,” the organization said in a press release following Trump’s announcement to tap Patel.
Padilla tried to argue that GOA has “extreme positions” on gun rights, such as opposing background checks on gun sales.
He claims that he has concerns about Patel’s ability to run the bureau that oversees NICS.
Here’s the thing that I find so absolutely pathetic about this. Patel got support from a group. Padilla is trying to use guilt by association to hurt Patel in his confirmation hearing. That was really popular with the Soviets and most other tyrants throughout the years.
Plus, I don’t know if he noticed, but his side got their butts kicked royally back in November, in part because the American public wasn’t overly impressed with their gun control efforts. If they really think the nominee from the guy most voters wanted and who won the electoral vote is going to be somehow unpopular because he got the support of a group that only vehement anti-gunners despise, then the midterms won’t look any better for them than the last election did.
For the record, the Second Amendment does protect machine gun ownership, and even with the jacked-up system we have, they’re still legally available if you’ve got the money, but Padilla is from California and so he thinks the Second Amendment means nothing, apparently.
Well, we’re likely to get Kash Patel as FBI director and then maybe he can right that particular ship. Next, we need Brandon Herrera for ATF director so he can dismantle the ATF and set gun control back decades while doing it.
Then, maybe, we can start feeling like a free country again.
Europe gave up their guns and now 60 Minutes is covering them raiding people over memes.
We cannot allow that to happen here, and Patel is just one brick in the wall meant to stop that from happening.
