The tragic deaths of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, have left authorities scrambling for answers as they investigate what they are calling “suspicious circumstances.”

A Santa Fe detective detailed in his affidavit that several factors led him to believe the deaths warranted deeper investigation.

Among the key concerns were an unsecured front door, a seemingly healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near Betsy’s body, and a deceased German Shepherd found in a closet.

Additionally, investigators noted that a space heater had been moved, a pill bottle was open with its contents scattered, and Gene’s body was located in a different room of the residence. Notably, there were no immediate signs of a gas leak.

Betsy Arakawa’s body was found in the bathroom, lying on her right side near the countertop. A deputy observed a black space heater positioned close to her head, raising the possibility that it may have been knocked over if she had collapsed suddenly.

The presence of an orange prescription bottle on the counter, opened with pills scattered about, added to the mystery. The state of her remains suggested she had been deceased for some time, with visible decomposition, bloating in her face, and mummification in her hands and feet.

Gene Hackman’s body was discovered in a separate room near the kitchen, fully clothed. Investigators speculated that he may have collapsed unexpectedly, as his sunglasses were found on the floor beside him.

Despite early concerns about a possible gas leak, the New Mexico Gas Company conducted thorough testing and determined that no issues were present in the home’s gas lines. Likewise, the fire department found no evidence of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The couple’s deceased dog, a German Shepherd, was found approximately 10 to 15 feet away from Betsy, inside a bathroom closet. However, two other dogs were found alive—one inside the house and one roaming outside.

Authorities were alerted to the scene after two maintenance workers, who hadn’t seen the couple for about two weeks, arrived and discovered the bodies. They noted that the front door was slightly ajar, but investigators reported no signs of forced entry.

While details remain murky, the strange circumstances surrounding the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa have sparked serious questions.
