An Italian tourist caused a scene in southern Thailand after being confronted by marine police for snorkeling in a protected coral conservation area.
The incident occurred on February 21 off the coast of Krabi, where authorities had prohibited swimming to protect recovering coral.
The tourist and his wife were seen paddling in the restricted zone when officers from the Nopparat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park intervened.

Officials explained that the area was off-limits and instructed the couple to board a speedboat that would take them back to shore. However, the man refused, launching into an angry tirade against the officers.
In a video capturing the encounter, the tourist is heard shouting profanities, calling the officers “crazy” and declaring, “This is my last time in f**king Thailand.”
The footage shows officers pulling the couple onto the vessel as the man continued his verbal outburst.
Authorities described the tourists’ reaction as aggressive and dismissive.

“They didn’t care about our rules,” one officer stated, adding that the man and his wife argued they had “paid good money for snorkeling” and should be allowed to do as they pleased.
The confrontation highlights ongoing tensions between foreign visitors and Thai authorities since the implementation of a visa-free entry scheme.
The program, introduced to boost post-pandemic tourism revenue, has led to an increase in travelers, but locals argue it has attracted “low-quality” visitors who disregard local regulations.
Psi Scott, a dual Scottish-Thai national and adviser to Thailand’s national parks, was part of the patrol that encountered the Italian couple.
He explained that the area is closed to swimming to allow coral to recover from bleaching caused by rising ocean temperatures.
“While we were in the middle of the sea, we came across these two foreigners, a couple about 700 meters away from the island—which is a closed coral conservation area,” Scott recalled.
Scott acknowledged that the couple might not have been aware of the restriction, as no tour guides were present to inform them.
However, he noted that they were swimming without supervision, which posed a safety risk.
“I warned them, but they acted like they didn’t understand and continued swimming,” Scott said.
“Our foreign volunteers blew their whistles, and they finally listened when I warned them again that this place was closed.”
Despite multiple warnings, the couple refused to leave, prompting officers to enter the water and physically escort them onto the boat.
The man then began cursing at the officers in Italian, calling them “annoying” and “crazy.”
He and his wife also argued that they preferred snorkeling in the conservation zone rather than near the beach, which they claimed was “for kids.”
The tourist’s meltdown sparked widespread criticism after video of the incident surfaced online. Social media users condemned his behavior, likening it to a child throwing a tantrum.
“Grown people acting like children, geez,” one TikTok user commented.
“I thought a jellyfish was inside his goggles for a sec… only to realize it was a tantrum,” another joked.
Others pointed out the disregard for local regulations.
“Why can’t people just respect rules and boundaries?” one person wrote. Another added, “Thailand doesn’t care if you return or not. Just follow the rules or leave.”
Even fellow Italians weighed in, with one user saying, “I am ashamed to be Italian. As an Italian, I apologize.”
Authorities have continued to stress the importance of following conservation rules to protect marine life and ensure tourist safety.
Scott noted that the number of tourists and tour boats in the area often exceeds the number of available supervisors, making enforcement challenging.
Conservationists are also tasked with monitoring visitors to prevent accidents, as the waters in the region are known to be unpredictable.
The Italian tourist’s outburst is just the latest in a series of confrontations between foreign visitors and Thai officials.
As tensions continue to rise, locals and conservationists are calling for stricter enforcement of regulations to prevent further incidents.
