The Pentagon has announced the deployment of approximately 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in the coming weeks as part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to curb illegal immigration.

The move comes as illegal crossings have dropped to historic lows since Trump returned to office.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered members of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion to the border to reinforce security operations.

The deployment is intended to strengthen efforts to “protect the territorial integrity of the United States,” the Pentagon stated in an announcement on Saturday.

The new troops will join the forces already stationed along the border, where crossings have significantly decreased since the administration implemented strict enforcement policies.

President Trump addressed the nation regarding border security, declaring in a Truth Social post on Saturday:

“The Invasion of our Country is Over. Anyone who tries to illegally enter the U.S.A. will face significant criminal penalties and immediate deportation.”

Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirms the effectiveness of the administration’s approach.

In February, just 8,326 individuals were apprehended at the southern border, marking the lowest monthly total on record.

This represents a 95% decrease from February 2024, when 189,913 migrants were apprehended, and a steep decline from January’s total of 61,465.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reinforced the administration’s stance in a statement on X, saying:

“The world is hearing our message: do not come to our country illegally. If you do, we will find you, arrest you, and send you back.”

Currently, about 9,200 U.S. troops are stationed along the southern border. This includes over 4,000 active-duty personnel deployed under federal orders and an additional 5,000 National Guard troops dispatched by state governors.

The latest reinforcements will further bolster efforts to prevent illegal crossings and support border security operations.

President Trump has made securing the border a top priority of his administration, using military personnel and strict enforcement measures to fulfill his campaign pledge of stopping illegal immigration.

His policies have focused on deterrence, increased deportations, and pressuring foreign governments to prevent migrant flows before they reach the U.S.

The use of military forces to support border security is not new, as troops have been deployed intermittently since the 1990s to address illegal migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime.

However, under the current administration, the military’s role has been significantly expanded to ensure that border security remains a top national priority.

As additional troops arrive at the border in the coming weeks, the administration expects to further reduce illegal entries while reinforcing the message that unlawful immigration will not be tolerated.
