Elon Musk Called This Financial News ‘Terrifying’

His threat comes as he works to negotiate a cease-fire in the war that has stretched beyond three years.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He urged both sides to negotiate immediately, stating, “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”

Trump, 78, has been applying pressure on both nations to reach an agreement. His administration is set to meet with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia next week to discuss cease-fire terms.

Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed Thursday that discussions will focus on ending hostilities, following the U.S. decision to pause military aid and intelligence sharing with Kyiv.

Tensions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky escalated last week when the two leaders clashed during a meeting at the White House.

Zelensky was asked to leave the Oval Office after expressing skepticism over a temporary cease-fire.

“We can’t just speak about cease-fire and speak and speak. It will not work,” Zelensky said, citing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s history of breaking agreements.

Trump pushed back, telling him, “Look, if you could get a cease-fire right now, I tell you you’d take it, so the bullets stop flying and your men stop getting killed.”

Trump’s administration has proposed a framework agreement that would grant the U.S. a 50% stake in Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals.

His administration argues that such a deal would provide Ukraine with security guarantees due to the presence of American mining personnel.

In addition to U.S. involvement, France and the UK have signaled plans to deploy peacekeeping forces in Ukraine once fighting ceases to help prevent future Russian incursions.

Under the previous administration, Joe Biden gradually increased economic pressure on Russia but did not impose sanctions on its oil exports until 10 days before leaving office.

Biden also refrained from sanctioning several Russian oligarchs, including two billionaires who had previously explored real estate deals in the U.S. with his son, Hunter Biden, during the Obama administration.

As Trump moves to force negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, his threat of large-scale sanctions signals a shift in strategy aimed at pushing both nations toward a final peace agreement.
