Charlemagne Calls Out GOP Rep for Weak Stance on Gender Debate [WATCH]

Radio host Charlamagne Tha God took issue with House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe Chairman Keith Self on Wednesday for abruptly ending a congressional hearing after being criticized for addressing Democratic Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride as “Mister.”

The incident occurred during a hearing on Tuesday when Self referred to McBride, the first transgender member of Congress, as “Mister McBride.”

Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Bill Keating immediately objected, leading Self to adjourn the hearing. The hearing was intended to discuss arms control and U.S. assistance to Europe.

Charlamagne, speaking on his show The Breakfast Club, awarded Self the segment’s infamous “Donkey of the Day” for failing to stand by his words and for shutting down the session instead of defending his position.

“I have to play white devil’s advocate here because I understand where Mr. Self is coming from because I, too, have been wondering what to do in this situation,” Charlamagne said.

“Because as Keith Self explained on social media—and I’m quoting him here—‘It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.’”

Charlamagne pointed out that Self’s reference came from an executive order signed by President Donald Trump at the start of his second term.

The executive order, titled Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government, mandates that the federal government apply “clear and accurate language,” specifying that the term “sex” should be used instead of “gender.”

The order explicitly states that the U.S. recognizes only two sexes—male and female—and that they “are not changeable.”

“Why? Because one of President Trump’s early moves of his second term was to sign an executive order that the federal government would only recognize two sexes and they were not changeable,” Charlamagne continued.

“Okay, an executive order was signed. It’s right there in black and white. I don’t know what to do in this situation. It’s all so confusing.”

Despite understanding Self’s position, Charlamagne expressed frustration that the chairman chose to adjourn the hearing rather than respond to Keating’s challenge.

“I’m not really upset at Keith Self for doing what the president told him to do. What I am upset about, and the reason I’m giving Keith Self ‘Donkey of the Day,’ is because he adjourned the session,” the radio host said.

“See, these petty culture wars are hurting democracy … they were in the middle of a hearing on arms control and U.S. assistance to Europe. I kind of know what that is. I believe I know what that means.”

“But I know one thing for sure: that panel is more important than whether or not Sarah McBride is referred to as ‘Mister’ or ‘Miss.’ Okay, Keith Self, there is no reason to adjourn a meeting because you was challenged on calling Sarah a him,” he continued.

“When William Keating says, ‘You out of order,’ say, ‘Well, hey, the president signed an executive order and that’s what I’m following.’”

The controversy surrounding McBride’s role in Congress has sparked broader policy discussions.

In November, Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a resolution to prohibit biological men from using women’s bathrooms within the Capitol complex.

This followed McBride’s election and a directive from House Speaker Mike Johnson mandating that “all single-sex facilities” in the Capitol and House office buildings must be “reserved for individuals of that biological sex.” McBride has since agreed to comply with the policy.

The debate over how Congress should approach gender identity continues to be a flashpoint in national politics, particularly as Trump’s executive order shapes how the federal government defines and enforces sex-based policies.
