Verdict: Misleading
While the video does show Putin discussing a ceasefire in relation to the Russia-Ukraine War, it is not recent but from June 2024.
Fact Check:
Putin said a ceasefire with Ukraine “must be aimed at long-lasting peace” while discussing a recent U.S. proposal aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine War, according to CNN. Putin also suggested he might speak with President Donald Trump as “many things still need to be discussed,” the outlet reported.
The X video, viewed over four million times as of writing, claims to show Putin recently discussing the terms of a ceasefire in relation to the Russia-Ukraine War.
“These conditions are very simple: Ukrainian troops must be completely withdrawn from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, and I draw attention to the entire territory of these regions, within their administrative borders that existed at the time of their entry into Ukraine,” Putin begins.
“As soon as Kiev declares that they are ready for such a decision to begin a real withdrawal of troops from these regions, and also officially notifies of the abandonment of plans to join NATO, we will immediately, literally at that very moment, issue an order to cease fire and begin negotiations. I repeat, we will do this without delay. Naturally, at the same time we guarantee the unimpeded and safe withdrawal of Ukrainian units and formations,” he continues.
The claim is misleading. While the video does show Putin discussing a ceasefire in relation to the Russia-Ukraine War, it is not recent but was published on The Guardian’s website in June 2024. “Putin sets out Russia’s conditions for peace talks with Ukraine – video,” the clip’s title reads.
Likewise, a transcript that appears on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation’s website also indicates Putin’s remarks are not recent but were delivered in June 2024 during a meeting with senior staff of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow.
