Three months into his second term, President Donald Trump has reached the highest approval rating of his presidency, according to a newly released NBC News poll.

The survey also found that more Americans believe the country is on the right track than at any point since 2004, signaling a shift in public sentiment.

The poll, released Sunday, showed that 47% of registered voters approve of Trump’s performance, while 51% disapprove.

This marks the highest rating for Trump in NBC’s polling history, tying previous highs recorded in early 2020 and October 2018.

The RealClearPolitics average of polls currently places Trump’s approval rating at 48.2%.

The survey found that 54% of voters disapprove of his handling of the economy, marking the first time in NBC’s polling that a majority of respondents viewed his economic policies negatively.

Even so, voters believe Trump is bringing “the right kind of change” on key issues, including tariffs.

According to the poll, 41% support his changes to trade policy, while 38% oppose them.

Trump’s trade policies have remained a focal point, particularly after his administration imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and a 20% tariff on China earlier this month.

Despite a market selloff in response, the poll suggests that a plurality of Americans back Trump’s approach to trade.

On border security, Trump’s policies received the strongest approval, with 56% of voters calling them a positive change.

His government spending cuts also saw more support than opposition, with 47% in favor compared to 29% against.

Foreign policy remains a contentious issue, but even in areas where Trump has faced significant opposition, his approval has remained steady.

His handling of the Ukraine war and NATO received more support (41% and 40%) than opposition.

Voters are also split on Trump’s impact on inflation.

While 40% say his policies are having a positive effect, 30% view them as harmful, and 28% believe they have made no difference.

Trump’s approval rating remains highly polarized, with 90% of Republicans approving of his performance compared to just 4% of Democrats.

According to NBC News, this marks the largest gap in party-based approval ratings for a president in at least 80 years.

One of the most notable shifts in public sentiment is in the overall outlook on the country’s direction.

The poll found that 44% of Americans believe the country is on the right track, the highest number recorded since President George W. Bush’s administration 20 years ago.

NBC: 44% of Americans say the country is headed in the right direction under President Trump, up from just 27% in November.

In contrast, 54% still believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

This is a significant improvement from last September, when only 28% of Americans said the country was on the right track, while 65% felt it was headed in the wrong direction.

A key policy initiative in Trump’s second term has been the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aimed at reducing bureaucracy and cutting costs.

The department has faced backlash from government employees and opposition from Democrats, with 47% of voters viewing DOGE negatively and 41% expressing support.

Despite some controversy, voters are generally in favor of the initiative, with 46% saying it was a good idea compared to 40% who oppose its creation.

Trump has remained firm in his support for DOGE, backing Elon Musk’s involvement in the project amid political pushback.

Meanwhile, Democrats are facing historic lows in public perception.

The poll found that only 27% of voters view the Democratic Party favorably, while 55% hold an unfavorable opinion—the worst numbers for the party in NBC News’ polling history.

A separate CNN poll echoed these findings, showing that just 29% of voters have a favorable view of Democrats, their lowest rating in CNN’s polling history.

Additionally, the media’s coverage of Trump remains under scrutiny.

The poll found that 46% of respondents believe the media has been too critical of Trump, while 25% feel it has been too supportive, and 24% approve of its approach.

The NBC News survey was conducted between March 7–11 and included 1,000 registered voters.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
