The passage of a stopgap spending continuing resolution (CR) in the Senate has deepened divisions within the Democratic Party, with high-profile members in both chambers clashing over the decision.
The conflict escalated when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and other House Democrats criticized Senate colleagues, including Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), for supporting the measure.
Ocasio-Cortez and her allies expressed a “deep sense of betrayal” over the Senate’s approval of the CR, which prevented a government shutdown.

“There is a deep sense of outrage and betrayal.”
“I think it is a huge slap in the face. We cannot afford to be in an ‘every person for themselves’ kind of moment.”

Some House Democrats even suggested that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) should face a primary challenge if he did not reverse course.

Fetterman dismissed Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism, making it clear that her opinion did not influence his decision.
“I hope you can relay how little I care about her views on this,” Fetterman responded.

He also pointed out that House members would continue receiving their paychecks regardless of a shutdown, implying that some were detached from the consequences of their opposition to the CR.
The Democratic divide was further highlighted during an exchange between Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) and CNN’s Jake Tapper on State of the Union Sunday.
Tapper brought up Fetterman’s recent remarks condemning certain House Democrats for engaging in “undignified antics” and self-inflicted political damage, referencing the “Choose Your Fighter” video featuring several Democratic lawmakers.

The video, which was meant to portray Democrats as fighters, drew criticism for its tone and approach.
Tapper jokingly told Crockett that her punching moves in the video looked better than those of her colleagues.
Crockett responded dismissively, taking a swipe at Fetterman instead.
“He’s not the one to talk about anything,” she said.
“I mean this is a guy who seemingly doesn’t want to own a suit, doesn’t own a suit. I’m not really sure. But I don’t show up in hoodies when I’m going on the floor.”
Crockett defended the video, claiming it showed Democrats were “real people” who needed moments of levity amid ongoing challenges.
However, she then pivoted back to attacking Fetterman, doubling down on her criticism.
“Just know, we were not on the House floor jumping around at all, whereas Senator Fetterman is consistently walking around the Senate chamber, and he is walking around in such a way that they literally had to change the rules in the Senate so that he could walk around that way. So I just don’t think he’s necessarily the one to have an opinion on this.”

Tapper: “John Fetterman has been criticizing your party for undignified antics and a sad cavalcade of self owns.”

The infighting among Democrats underscores the growing rift within the party as they struggle to maintain a unified front.
Fetterman, despite his untraditional approach to Senate decorum, has remained firm on his position regarding government funding.
His response to Ocasio-Cortez and the broader criticism from the House demonstrates a willingness to break from the progressive wing when necessary.
Meanwhile, the tensions between House and Senate Democrats continue to spill into the public eye.
The frustration among Democratic lawmakers comes as President Donald Trump’s administration secures a string of policy victories, further intensifying political pressure on the left.
As internal disputes escalate, Democrats face increasing scrutiny from voters.
Recent polls indicate declining public approval of the party, a trend that could impact their standing in upcoming elections.
While Democratic leaders attempt to manage internal disagreements, their ongoing public feuds raise questions about their ability to present a united front against the Republican-led agenda.
