FACT CHECK: Claim That Military Has Arrested Judge Boasberg Is Satire

A post shared on Facebook claims the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps has purportedly arrested Judge James Boasberg for treason.

The claim is false and originally stems from a March 20 article published on the satire site, “Real Raw News.” A spokesperson for Navy JAG denied the claim’s validity in an email to Check Your Fact.

Fact Check:

President Donald Trump referred to Boasberg as a “Radical Left Lunatic Judge” who “wants to assume the role of President” following Boasberg’s efforts to block Trump’s deportation flights, according to The Hill. Boasberg recently ordered a flight carrying Venezuelan migrants to be turned around, the outlet reported.

The Facebook post claims Navy JAG has purportedly arrested Boasberg for treason. The same post claims that Boasberg allegedly received money from the Democratic political action committee Act Blue and was instructed by former President Barack Obama to “injunct [Trump’s efforts to deport members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua].” The post further claims Navy JAG purportedly “trailed” Boasberg and apprehended him at a restaurant in Washington, D.C.

The claim is false and originally stems from a March 20 article published on the satire site, “Real Raw News.” A “Disclaimer” included on the site’s “About Us” page indicates its content is not meant to be taken literally. “Information on this website is for informational and educational and entertainment purposes. This website contains humor, parody, and satire. We have included this disclaimer for our protection, on the advice [of] legal counsel,” the disclaimer reads.

Likewise, the claim is neither referenced on Navy JAG’s website nor its verified social media accounts. Neither Act Blue nor Obama appears to have issued a statement responding to the claim. Trump has not publicly commented on the claim, either. In addition, Check Your Fact did not find any credible news reports to support the claim. Furthermore, Patricia Babb, a spokesperson for Navy JAG, denied the claim’s validity in an email to Check Your Fact.

“This is not true,” Babb said of the claim.
