Authorities in Alexandria, Virginia, are investigating the death of Jessica Aber, a former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, who was found deceased in her home Saturday morning.

According to a statement released by the Alexandria Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding an unresponsive woman at approximately 9:18 a.m. Eastern Time.

Upon arrival, they discovered the body of Aber, age 43, at the scene.

The residence where she was found is located in Alexandria, though it was not initially confirmed by police whether the home belonged to her or who had placed the emergency call.

However, several of Aber’s former colleagues confirmed to media outlets that the home was indeed her personal residence.

Aber was appointed U.S. Attorney by President Joe Biden in August 2021. She stepped down from her position in January 2025 at the start of President Donald Trump’s second term in office.

Born in Walnut Creek, California, in 1981, Aber pursued her legal career in Virginia, earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond in 2003 and a law degree from William & Mary Law School in 2006.

She clerked for U.S. District Judge M. Hannah Lauck—then a magistrate judge—in Richmond early in her career.

Judge Lauck, speaking to The Washington Post, remembered Aber as “brilliant,” and praised her “sense for justice…[and] her humanity,” adding, “my clerk family has lost its rock, and I have lost a friend.”

Aber was widely known for her work as a federal prosecutor in several high-profile cases. She was part of the prosecution team that secured a jury conviction against former Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell in a 2014 corruption case.

The convictions were later overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Before her resignation, Aber cited her office’s role in securing a corporate espionage conviction against Siemens Energy Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of Siemens Energy AG.

The case involved the theft of trade secrets from General Electric and Mitsubishi, both of which were competitors in a Virginia power plant bidding process.

Siemens pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a $104 million penalty.

Aber noted that the criminal conviction was a key achievement, especially in an era when many corporations avoided charges through deferred prosecution agreements.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Aber spoke about her work to build stronger ties between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

She said she had driven more than 50,000 miles across Virginia in her Hyundai to meet with students and civic groups.

“We follow the facts and the law, trying to do it in an entirely apolitical way,” she told the paper.

Aber oversaw nearly 300 attorneys during her time leading the Eastern District of Virginia, which includes Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, and the Richmond area.

She also praised efforts made in cooperation with Virginia’s Republican Attorney General, Jason Miyares.

Their offices worked together on Operation Ceasefire, a joint task force focused on prosecuting gun crimes in high-crime cities.

Aber credited the initiative with contributing to a decrease in violent crime rates across the state.

In a statement posted to the Alexandria Police Department’s official X account, officials said the cause and manner of Aber’s death have not yet been released, as that determination falls under the jurisdiction of Virginia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The department confirmed that “as a matter of protocol, an investigation is underway surrounding the circumstances of her death.”
