The Department of Justice has announced the formation of a new internal task force aimed at investigating and prosecuting fraud in federal programs.

The task force, developed in partnership with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), was unveiled Monday by Attorney General Pam Bondi during a cabinet event.

The initiative comes in response to widespread revelations of fraud within various government programs.

Many of these cases were brought to light through investigations conducted by DOGE, a department led by Elon Musk.

“There is a tremendous amount of fraud, and Elon, thank you for your partnership, thank you for your team. You have uncovered so much fraud in our government. And we will prosecute you. We have an internal task force now working with every agency sitting here at this table,” Bondi said.

The DOJ task force will work alongside DOGE and collaborate with multiple federal agencies to uncover fraudulent activity and pursue legal action against those responsible. Bondi emphasized the DOJ’s commitment to taking strong legal measures against wrongdoers.

“If you’ve committed fraud, we’re coming after you,” Bondi stated.

In addition to tackling fraud, Bondi said the DOJ is acting on directives from President Donald Trump to reinstate the federal death penalty for violent criminals.

“On the violent crime level, thanks to President Trump’s directive, we are seeking the death penalty again. So all of these horrible, violent criminals that you’re hearing about around the country, they will face the death penalty federally within our country,” Bondi said.

She also issued a warning to those involved in the illegal drug trade.

“The drug dealers need to get out of here because we are coming after you!” she added.

The effort aligns with ongoing attempts to increase oversight and efficiency across federal programs.

DOGE’s Subcommittee has identified billions of dollars in fraudulent or improper payments, pointing to major flaws in existing payment systems.

As part of its cost-reduction agenda, DOGE has led a number of actions targeting spending across federal departments.

Notably, the Environmental Protection Agency recently announced it had canceled more than 400 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Environmental Justice grants, generating over $2 billion in savings.

However, DOGE’s investigations have drawn legal challenges. A federal judge issued a temporary order blocking DOGE from accessing Social Security Administration systems, citing concerns over potential overreach in what the court described as “fishing expeditions” for fraud.

Additionally, 19 states filed a lawsuit against DOGE to prevent access to the Treasury Department’s payment systems, which led to a preliminary injunction.

The DOJ has become involved in these legal battles.

Assistant Attorney General Gail Slater announced that the department is conducting a review of spending on external consultants in the DOJ’s Antitrust Division. This review is part of broader efforts to align with DOGE’s push for more efficient use of taxpayer dollars.

Federal prosecutor Edward Martin has also addressed resistance to DOGE’s investigations, warning of possible legal consequences for those who attempt to obstruct ongoing efforts.

The White House has appointed Amy Gleason as the acting administrator of DOGE.

However, President Trump has publicly affirmed that Elon Musk is overseeing the department’s efforts.

The task force marks a significant step in what appears to be a sweeping federal initiative to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse within the U.S. government.
