It’s not an April Fool’s joke—but maybe it should’ve been.
Officials in Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania, rolled out a head-scratching traffic experiment that’s turning more heads than it’s slowing down cars, as reported by The New York Post.
Just outside Philadelphia, the township installed curvy, wave-like lines down Grays Lane, along with some curb extensions, claiming it’s all part of a new “traffic calming” initiative.

Their goal? Slow down speeders. The result? A street that looks more like a theme park ride than a neighborhood road.
Residents aren’t amused.
“These traffic calming measures are being installed due to the numerous complaints/concerns we receive from residents about the ‘speedway’ Grays Lane has become,” township officials posted on Facebook. But that explanation didn’t do much to ease concerns or confusion.

“I think speed bumps would have gone a lot further as far as slowing people down on this road in particular,” resident William King told NBC News Philadelphia.
Another local, Mike DiLorenzo, didn’t hold back either: “This is not the design to go. There are other options out there, and I think they should have gone that way.”
The so-called solution has sparked ridicule, not relief. Some residents say they’re ignoring the wavy lines altogether and driving as they always have—straight down the road.
Others are having a little more fun with the absurdity. One person said the ride down Grays Lane “felt like a roller coaster.”
Another joked, “If you were to drive like that down the street the police would think you were drinking and driving and pull you over.”
And in perhaps the most accurate jab, someone said it “looks like you gave creative license to a class of kindergarteners.”
But there was at least one voice of support. Joe Albanese from Montgomeryville told 6ABC Action News he thinks the effort might actually help.

“With all the school stops and people walking and animals crossing, it’s always very dangerous,” he said. “I thought it looked a little crazy when I saw the guys do it this morning, but it makes sense to me because folks are always going way too fast down Grays Lane.”
Still, so many residents were convinced the strange paint job was a prank that the township had to publicly confirm it wasn’t satire. “Yes, this is a legitimate precaution that has been put in place,” officials clarified.
In a time when local leaders should be focused on commonsense solutions, this move feels more like a bureaucratic fever dream than responsible planning. And if you’ve got to announce it’s not a joke, maybe it’s time to go back to the drawing board.
