A panel discussion on CNN’s NewsNight with Abby Phillip turned tense Wednesday night during a segment focused on the Trump administration’s interest in Greenland.

The debate erupted between GOP strategist Scott Jennings and former MSNBC host Tiffany Cross over claims that President Donald Trump’s Greenland policy reflected a colonial mindset.

The panel was discussing previous efforts by the Trump administration to explore acquiring Greenland, a territory under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Cross characterized the approach as “colonizing,” accusing the administration of trying to “steal” the island.

“It’s a colonizer’s attitude to say, ‘I like it, I’m just going to steal it,’” Cross said during the broadcast.

Jennings pushed back, arguing that there was no such attempt to seize Greenland.

“The administration is not, in fact, trying to steal anything,” Jennings said.

Cross maintained her stance, stating, “Well, that is what they’re trying to do. And in this new world order — yeah, absolutely. When they’re looking at Greenland and say, ‘I like it, I want to take it for mine,’ that is a very colonizing attitude.”

Host Abby Phillip, who frequently moderates heated exchanges on the show, entered the conversation by pointing out Jennings’ previous support for exploring the acquisition of Greenland.

“I have never, ever said we’re going to go to Greenland and ‘colonize it’ or steal it,” Jennings replied. “That’s crazy.”

Cross responded, “I’m not even talking about you. You’re not a member of the government, so you’re irrelevant at that point. I’m talking about the president of the United States.”

Jennings then fired back, referencing Cross’s career status: “You got fired from your job. How relevant are you?”

The exchange continued with Jennings repeatedly challenging Cross’s arguments as she defended her claims about the administration’s intentions.

Cross had previously hosted MSNBC’s The Cross Connection until the network chose not to renew her program just before the 2022 midterms.

According to a report from Mediaite at the time, Cross’s content “did not adhere to MSNBC’s standards.”

During her time at the network, Cross often sparked controversy over remarks made on her show by herself and her guests.

In past media appearances, Cross has compared the MAGA hat to a swastika and stated that it was time for media to label supporters of President Trump as “racists.”

In 2021, she was the subject of media attention for promoting a theory that white supremacy was a factor in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Black communities.

The segment drew criticism from political commentators across the spectrum.

In 2022, guests on Cross’s show included Roland Martin, who said Republican voters were “evil” and called for “war” against them; Elie Mystal, who referred to a Black GOP candidate as “clearly unintelligent”; and contributor Sarah Kendzior, who promoted the theory that Trump was “installed” to serve Russian interests.

Cross’s contract was not renewed just days before the midterm elections, effectively ending her time at MSNBC.

The network did not comment further on the decision beyond confirming the cancellation of her weekend program.

Wednesday night’s exchange between Jennings and Cross on CNN highlighted continued tensions in media discourse over the Trump administration’s foreign policy and broader political divides over its legacy.
