A resurfaced clip from a 2006 episode of The Apprentice is drawing new scrutiny to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s past praise of President Donald Trump, at a time when Schumer is one of the president’s most outspoken critics.
The episode in question—Season 5, Episode 8—recently became available for streaming on Amazon Prime. It featured a reward segment in which winning contestants traveled to Washington, D.C., for a breakfast meeting with Schumer at the historic Hay-Adams hotel.
During the meeting, Schumer appeared to speak favorably of Trump, recounting their shared New York roots and family connections.

“I was born in Brooklyn, the same place where Donald Trump’s family comes from,” Schumer told the group. “His father, and my grandfather, were builders together in Brooklyn.”
One contestant reacted audibly, “Wow!?” while another asked, “Really?”
Schumer confirmed, “Yeah!” before continuing to praise Trump’s early career trajectory. “Even when [Trump] was much younger, you knew that he was going to go places,” he said.
The show included a voice-over from a contestant who observed, “Sen. Schumer and Mr. Trump are good friends.”

That portrayal sharply contrasts with Schumer’s current posture toward Trump.
In an interview with Politico in 2016, Schumer stated flatly, “[Trump] was not my friend,” describing the relationship instead as a “casual acquaintance.”
His criticisms have only intensified since then.
During a media interview last month, Schumer said, “Donald Trump is a lawless, angry man.”
He later posted on social media, “The fact that The Apprentice President Donald ‘You’re Fired’ Trump is refusing to hold people accountable just shows how weak he is.”
The contrast between Schumer’s past praise and his current rhetoric has prompted a wave of reactions from both sides of the aisle.
Michigan State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt posted the resurfaced footage with the caption, “How things change…”
Former Democratic Rhode Island state legislator Aaron Regunberg added his own sharp rebuke, saying, “As Schumer sells out our Constitution and democracy, you just gotta watch this clip of him sucking up to Trump on an episode of The Apprentice. What a world class slug of a man.”

Even Trump himself had, at one point, acknowledged a positive relationship with Schumer.
Speaking on MSNBC in early 2017 before taking office, he said, “I was always very good with Schumer. I was close to Schumer in many ways.”
At the time, Trump said he thought he could “get along well with Chuck Schumer.”
That sentiment has since shifted dramatically. Trump recently accused Schumer of failing to stand up for the Jewish community amid rising antisemitism, particularly following the Hamas terror attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023.
“Schumer is a Palestinian, as far as I’m concerned,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office earlier this month.
“He’s become a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He’s not Jewish anymore.”

Trump’s criticism echoes previous comments from his campaign trail, when he referred to Schumer as a “proud member of Hamas.”
The dynamic between Schumer and Trump mirrors a broader pattern of public figures who once spoke highly of Trump before turning against him once he entered politics.
In a 1988 interview, Oprah Winfrey called Trump a “folk hero” and noted America’s fascination with him.
Likewise, music mogul Russell Simmons once described Trump as “very nice” and supportive of his family, only to later denounce Trump as a “great divider” and environmental “destroyer” following the violence in Charlottesville during Trump’s first term.
The newly circulated Apprentice footage has reignited conversations around political hypocrisy and evolving alliances in Washington, especially as President Trump continues to face both bipartisan criticism and staunch conservative support during his second term.
