A Florida man is facing multiple felony charges after leading deputies on a vehicle chase through Highlands County, during which he attempted to offer officers a vodka spritzer instead of pulling over, as reported by The New York Post.
According to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began Saturday at the Spring Lake Market, where 39-year-old Richard Christopher Smith of Miami allegedly stole several items, including alcohol.
After taking the items, Smith left the store without paying and drove off in a vehicle.

Deputies responding to the scene attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Smith refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit.
During the chase, authorities said Smith leaned out of his window and held up a can of Ketel One vodka spritz, appearing to offer it to a pursuing deputy.
“I was just going to give you a drink, that’s it,” Smith reportedly said while continuing to flee.

In a post shared on social media, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office remarked:
“We don’t know if he was expecting us to just say ‘Cheers!’ and let him go, or what.”

The chase came to an end in the parking lot of a business near Sebring Regional Airport after deputies deployed spike strips, flattening all four of Smith’s tires.
Despite his vehicle being disabled, Smith attempted to ram two patrol vehicles before finally coming to a stop.
After exiting the car, Smith casually lit a cigarette and began walking away from deputies as if nothing had happened. “You guys had fun, though, right?” he reportedly asked, moments before being subdued with a Taser and taken into custody.
