Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing significant challenges within his own party as new polling shows his approval ratings dropping sharply among Democrats in his home state of New York.

According to polling data reviewed by CNN data analyst Harry Enten, Schumer’s standing with New York Democrats has deteriorated markedly since late 2024.

During a recent segment, Enten highlighted the rapid decline, calling the numbers a warning sign for the longtime senator.

“New York Democrats on Chuck Schumer viewed him favorably in December of 2024. That was just a few months ago. It was 73 percent,” Enten said.

“Look at where that number has fallen to in just a few months. It is now down to just 52 percent. That is the lowest I could ever find in Siena College on how Democrats in Chuck Schumer’s home state view him.”

The data comes from the Siena College Research Institute, which regularly tracks approval ratings of public officials in New York.

The decline is particularly notable given Schumer’s seniority and leadership role in the U.S. Senate.

Enten also pointed to the rising popularity of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), whose favorable ratings among Democrats in the state currently stand in the 60s.

The contrast has fueled speculation about a possible future primary challenge to Schumer.

“If you’re thinking about a primary challenge, it would be a few years away, but Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s favorable rating among Democrats is considerably higher,” Enten said.

“He is doing quite poorly in his own home state of New York. I never thought I’d see the day in which just 52 percent of New York Democrats would view Chuck Schumer favorably.”

Enten continued by examining additional polling questions related to Schumer’s role as Senate leader.

“Should Schumer stay as Senate leader? Again, according to New York Democrats, just 50 percent say yes. Look at this number—48 percent say no,” Enten noted.

“This screams sirens should be going off—primary challenge, primary challenge, primary challenge.”

The latest figures highlight an erosion of support that may open the door to intraparty competition in future election cycles.

While Schumer does not face re-election until 2028, political analysts note that declining numbers this early could pose a risk if discontent within the party continues to grow.

The numbers also reflect broader dissatisfaction with Democratic leadership among their own base, particularly in traditionally blue states like New York.

Recent months have seen high-profile protests, internal disagreements, and growing frustration from voters seeking action on economic and legislative issues.

Schumer, who has served in the Senate since 1999 and currently leads Democrats in the upper chamber, has not responded publicly to the polling data.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has also not commented on whether she has any future plans to run for the Senate.

As internal polling and national dynamics continue to shift, Democrats in New York may face renewed pressure to assess their leadership heading into future cycles.
