Author and journalist Batya Ungar-Sargon confronted CNN panelists on Thursday, criticizing them for appearing to trust China over President Donald Trump regarding ongoing trade negotiations.

The exchange occurred during a segment discussing the status of U.S.-China trade talks, where conflicting reports have emerged about whether negotiations are underway.

While President Trump has stated that talks with China are active, Chinese officials have publicly denied the existence of any negotiations.

During the panel discussion, former NewsNation host Dan Abrams noted, “We don’t know if China’s lying or not, but I’m just saying that there’s no doubt that there’s a different story coming out of China.”

Ungar-Sargon challenged the panel’s posture, saying, “Why are you guys on China’s side in this? It’s insane!”

She criticized the panelists for displaying more skepticism toward the President of the United States than toward a foreign adversary.

SiriusXM host John Fugelsang questioned how the public could trust Trump, asking, “How can you not trust China but trust Donald Trump?”

Responding, Ungar-Sargon said, “Are you kidding me? I think that’s very sad that you trust our greatest adversary over the President of the United States who was elected by over 80 million of your fellow Americans. That’s pathetic.”

Fugelsang countered by arguing that Trump lacked a broad mandate, referencing the results of the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections.

“Excuse me, the majority of people who showed up to vote against him in 2016, 2020, and 2024. There’s no mandate to speak of,” Fugelsang said.

He claimed that there was no reason to trust Trump over China.

However, President Trump became the first Republican since 2004 to win the popular vote, defeating former Vice President Kamala Harris.

His approval ratings have also been reported as higher than during his first term in office.

During the segment, Fugelsang claimed that Trump’s perceived lack of trustworthiness would harm the U.S.’s ability to negotiate internationally. Ungar-Sargon pushed back, noting that over 100 countries were currently engaged in communications with the Trump administration regarding reciprocal trade agreements.

She asked, “Are you not embarrassed to give preference to China over the United States?”

Fugelsang continued to criticize Trump’s record, citing the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Climate Accord as evidence that international partners could not trust the United States under Trump’s leadership.

He added, “We can’t even get tourists to come anymore. People are deciding, you know what? This year I’ll try North Korea.”

Meanwhile, President Trump announced on Tuesday that the U.S. plans to ease tariffs on China “substantially,” although tariffs will not be completely eliminated.

The U.S.-China tariff battle began after Trump’s April 2 announcement of new tariffs, which prompted immediate retaliation from Beijing.

By April 9, Trump escalated the situation by increasing tariffs on Chinese goods from 104% to 125%, after initially pausing tariff hikes on other nations to allow room for negotiations.

On April 10, he raised the tariff rate to a minimum of 145% on all Chinese goods, according to The New York Times. As of April 15, the White House confirmed that tariffs on some Chinese imports have reached as high as 245%.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated optimism about the situation during a speech on Tuesday, saying he expects a “de-escalation” in the trade conflict between the U.S. and China, according to The Associated Press.
