A group of four Democratic lawmakers is facing scrutiny after traveling to El Salvador to advocate for the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who was deported from the United States under President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies.
The delegation’s trip, which reportedly included stays at a luxury hotel in San Salvador, has drawn criticism from House Republicans who accused the lawmakers of using the visit as an excuse for a “tropical vacation.”
Reps. Maxwell Frost (FL), Robert Garcia (CA), Maxine Dexter (OR), and Yassamin Ansari (AZ) traveled to San Salvador earlier this month with the stated goal of pressuring the Salvadoran government to release Abrego Garcia.

He has become the center of political debate following a U.S. Supreme Court decision that upheld an order requiring the Trump administration to facilitate his return to the United States.
According to a report by the Daily Caller News Foundation, the four members of Congress stayed at the Hilton San Salvador, a five-star hotel known for its scenic views and luxury accommodations.
The hotel features rooms with vistas of San Salvador’s volcano, an outdoor terrace, and a restaurant offering made-to-order local cuisine, including pupusas and margaritas.
Online listings describe the hotel as a “tranquil retreat” for travelers seeking both comfort and high-end amenities.

A source familiar with the lawmakers’ travel arrangements told the outlet that they were “staying at the Hilton San Salvador, a luxury property situated against a picturesque backdrop of the capital city’s volcano.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) issued a statement condemning the trip, especially in light of ongoing concerns about the southern border and illegal immigration-related crime in the United States.
“House Democrats booked their tropical vacation to El Salvador in the lap of luxury,” NRCC spokesperson Ben Petersen said.
“While the American people suffer the consequences of the Biden Border Crisis importing illegal immigrant crime and fentanyl, these Democrats demonstrated again they are completely out of touch with voters.”
The lawmakers did not publicly disclose their accommodations during the trip.
However, videos later surfaced showing them filming from locations that matched the layout and appearance of the Hilton San Salvador.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari appeared in a video from her hotel room, though only curtains and a wall were visible in the frame.
We are in a constitutional crisis.
I’m in El Salvador to shine a light on Kilmar’s story and keep the pressure on Donald Trump to secure his safe return home.

Rep. Maxine Dexter filmed from a terrace area believed to be part of the hotel’s scenic patio space.
I am in El Salvador because I will not stand by while our country is thrown into a constitutional crisis. This is a moment to act. I will not rest until due process is upheld for all.

Rep. Robert Garcia participated in a CBS News interview from what appeared to be a spacious suite with expansive views of El Salvador’s landscape.
In a separate Instagram video, Rep. Maxwell Frost accused the Trump administration of violating due process in its handling of deportation cases.
“Trump is illegally arresting, jailing, & deporting people with no due process,” he said, as a mountain range and forested terrain formed the backdrop of the recording.
Despite the trip’s stated purpose, the delegation was reportedly unable to meet with Abrego Garcia during their visit.
According to The Daily Caller, one reporter who covered the trip described it as “pointless.”
The Supreme Court ruling in Abrego Garcia’s case has been the focus of recent political debate.
President Trump and members of his administration have described Garcia as an MS-13 gang member with a violent history.
During a recent Oval Office interview with ABC’s Terry Moran, Trump said Garcia had “MS-13 tattooed on his knuckles” and insisted that his deportation was justified.
President Trump: “He had MS13 tattooed on his knuckles.”
ABC: “He had some tattoos that are interpreted that way.”
Trump: “It says MS13.”
ABC: “That was photoshopped.”
Trump: “Do you want me to show you the picture?”
ABC: “I’m not an expert.”

The Democratic lawmakers’ trip to El Salvador took place during a scheduled congressional recess, a period typically intended for lawmakers to return to their home districts.
Critics have argued that the visit reflects misplaced priorities amid growing domestic concerns.
As of this report, none of the four representatives have publicly responded to questions about the cost of the trip, their accommodations, or whether any taxpayer funds were used.
