To understand our crisis, return, for a moment, to the founding itself. America’s Constitution reveals a none-too-exaggerated concern with independence of the internal and external variety. Within the borders of the United States, the judiciary, executive, and legislative branches were to have distinct and separate powers. Beyond the border of the United States, the country was to maintain its freedom from foreign encroachment. This began with safeguarding the highest office in the land from foreign influence.
