President Donald Trump offered unexpected praise to Chris Cuomo during a live phone interview Wednesday night, acknowledging a personal “comfort call” the NewsNation anchor made following the assassination attempt on Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July, as reported by The New York Post.
“I do remember your call. I appreciate your call, and I actually appreciate your family. I’ve known your family for a long time,” Trump said during the segment.
Cuomo, the younger brother of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, referenced the call while asking Trump a broader question about national unity.

“There was a lot of heat that came my way — as if I shouldn’t have been making a comfort call to Donald Trump,” Cuomo said. He then asked:
“Every president who is considered great was seen as a unifier. What do you need to do to be remembered as someone who could bring this country together?”
Trump responded, before extending the conciliatory acknowledgment toward the Cuomo family.
“I think I will be a great unifier.”

The exchange marked a notable moment in what has otherwise been a long and combative relationship between Trump and the Cuomo brothers.

During his first term, Trump frequently clashed with then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, especially over the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the summer 2020 unrest in New York City.
In June 2020, Trump sharply criticized both Cuomo brothers in a tweet:
“Yesterday was a bad day for the Cuomo Brothers. New York was lost to the looters, thugs, Radical Left, and all other forms of Lowlife & Scum. The Governor refuses to accept my offer of a dominating National Guard. NYC was ripped to pieces. Likewise, Fredo’s ratings are down 50%!”
Trump also denounced Andrew Cuomo’s pandemic memoir and directly blamed him for thousands of nursing home deaths, tweeting in September 2020:
“Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York has the worst record on death and China Virus. 11,000 people alone died in Nursing Homes because of his incompetence!”

In 2023, Trump rejected reports that he had praised the former governor. “I never praised Former Governor Andrew Cuomo,” he stated. “I thought he was a horrible Governor, and have made that point for years.”
Despite resigning in 2021 during a sexual harassment scandal, Andrew Cuomo has recently launched a political comeback.
A Siena College poll released earlier this month showed him leading the Democratic primary field for New York City mayor with 34% support.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, weakened by a federal corruption investigation, announced this month that he would not seek the Democratic nomination and would instead run as an independent.
Meanwhile, congressional Republicans continue to push for a Department of Justice perjury investigation into Andrew Cuomo related to his alleged role in concealing the true number of COVID-19 deaths in New York nursing homes.
