President Donald Trump has dismissed Carla Hayden from her position as Librarian of Congress, ending her tenure at the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution.

The decision was communicated via email on Thursday by the White House Presidential Personnel Office and confirmed by a Library of Congress spokesperson to the Associated Press.

“Carla,” the message began, “On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.”

Hayden, who was appointed to the role by former President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in 2016, had served as the 14th Librarian of Congress.

She was the first woman and the first African American to hold the post in the institution’s over 200-year history.

The termination sparked swift criticism from Democratic lawmakers.

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-MN) accused President Trump of attempting to control what Americans read.

“While President Trump wants to ban books and tell Americans what to read — or not to read at all, Dr. Hayden has devoted her career to making reading and the pursuit of knowledge available to everyone,” Heinrich said in a statement.

Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY) also weighed in, calling Hayden a “patriotic public servant.”

“Tonight, President Trump fired a patriotic public servant,” Morelle wrote on X.

“@LibnOfCongress has spent her entire career serving people—from helping kids learn to read to protecting some of our nation’s most precious treasures. She is an American hero.”

Morelle went on to call the firing “a complete disgrace,” claiming the decision would negatively affect libraries, copyright protections, and Congressional services.

However, not all reactions were critical.

The American Accountability Foundation, a conservative watchdog group, supported the move and cited Hayden’s leadership direction as a reason for her dismissal.

“The current #LibrarianOfCongress Carla Hayden is woke, anti-Trump and promotes trans-ing kids,” the group posted on X.

“It’s time to get her OUT and hire a new guy for the job.”

During her tenure, Hayden oversaw several modernization initiatives, including digitization efforts and expanded public access to the Library’s collections.

She was also involved in programming that promoted a broad range of literature, including content that critics argue pushed political and cultural agendas into taxpayer-funded institutions.

The role of Librarian of Congress includes overseeing more than 170 million items housed by the Library and managing copyright services that impact the U.S. economy and cultural preservation efforts.

The Librarian also serves as a key resource provider for lawmakers and congressional staff.

As of Friday, the White House has not named an interim replacement or nominee for the position.

The selection process is expected to follow the same presidential nomination and Senate confirmation procedures outlined under federal law.
