President Donald Trump has formally requested that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mobilize 20,000 additional law enforcement officers to support what he described as the “largest deportation in American history.”

BREAKING: President Trump has signed an executive order directing the DHS to add at least 20,000 law enforcement officers to carry out what he calls the ‘largest deportation in American history.’

The request was issued through a presidential proclamation on Friday, marking a major step in Trump’s immigration enforcement strategy during his second term in office.

The proclamation, which outlines a renewed effort to remove individuals in the country illegally, calls on DHS to begin “deputizing and contracting with state and local law enforcement officers, former federal officers, officers and personnel within other federal agencies, and other individuals.”

The order directs DHS to begin implementation “no later than 60 days after the date of this proclamation.”

Currently, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employs approximately 6,000 officers dedicated to deportation enforcement.

Trump’s latest directive would more than triple that number, though the administration has not yet provided specific details on how the expansion would be funded.

Congressional Republicans are concurrently pursuing federal budget reductions, raising questions about the financial logistics of the effort.

The announcement comes on the heels of a new DHS initiative designed to encourage voluntary departures.

Earlier this week, DHS officials confirmed the agency would offer migrants $1,000 to self-deport. The federal government would also cover their travel expenses under the voluntary removal program.

Trump referenced the voluntary departure initiative in the proclamation, officially naming it “Project Homecoming.”

“This proclamation establishes Project Homecoming, which will present illegal aliens with a choice: either leave the United States voluntarily, with the support and financial assistance of the federal government, or remain and face the consequences,” the proclamation states.

The administration’s broader deportation strategy includes measures to expand ICE’s operational authority.

Under new enforcement policies, ICE officers have been permitted to operate in areas previously deemed sensitive, such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship.

Additionally, DHS has resumed immigration enforcement actions targeting international students and has carried out raids in several major U.S. cities.

Friday’s proclamation reiterates the administration’s emphasis on removing individuals who entered the country unlawfully.

It also signals a significant escalation in federal coordination with local and state authorities to accomplish mass deportations.

The push for expanded enforcement comes amid continued political debate over immigration policy and border security.

President Trump has repeatedly emphasized the need for strict enforcement, citing concerns about crime, economic burden, and national security.

The administration’s recent actions reflect a shift toward more aggressive tactics, as officials prepare to significantly scale up removals nationwide.

It remains unclear whether Congress will approve funding for the proposed increase in enforcement personnel, or whether legal challenges may arise as the administration seeks to expand ICE’s authority.

However, DHS has been directed to begin preparation and coordination immediately, with the goal of operational readiness within 60 days.
