Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found themselves the target of a sharp joke on NBC’s Saturday Night Live this weekend, amid growing signs that American media and audiences may be souring on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
During the show’s “Weekend Update” segment, host Colin Jost delivered a joke while discussing a new UK-U.S. trade deal involving President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
“President Trump also announced a new trade deal with the UK that will reopen British markets for American companies. All that Britain demands in return is that we keep these two,” Jost said, as an image of Harry and Meghan appeared on screen.

The jab follows an increasing trend of American coverage turning more critical of the royal couple, who left their roles as senior royals and moved to California in 2020.
The two had initially received favorable press in the U.S., including Meghan’s 2018 Vanity Fair cover with the headline “She’s just wild about Harry!” and their widely viewed 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

However, a February 2024 Vanity Fair feature marked a notable shift.
The 8,000-word exposé, titled “American Hustle,” cited numerous sources close to the couple who described Harry and Meghan as “the most entitled, disingenuous people on the planet.”
The article claimed that Meghan could be “really, really awful” when things did not go her way, and that she was known to turn “cold and withholding” toward staff she blamed for setbacks.
The piece detailed internal dysfunction after the couple’s exit from royal duties.
Despite the criticism, the couple’s marriage was described by a source as strong, with one person stating, “their love is real” and they are still “hot for each other.”
In the same week as the SNL joke, Harry returned to the headlines after losing a legal appeal concerning security protections while in the U.K.
The May 2 ruling upheld the Home Office’s decision to downgrade his security, prompting Harry to call it a “good old-fashioned Establishment stitch-up.”
He then gave an interview to the BBC, where he stated that King Charles “won’t speak to me” and that he “doesn’t know how much longer he has left.”
Following the interview, a YouGov poll revealed that Prince Harry remains the second most popular living royal among Americans, behind only his brother, Prince William.
Princess Catherine and King Charles also polled higher than Meghan, who received 41 percent favorability and 25 percent unfavorability—despite being the only U.S. citizen on the list.
The Duke and Duchess made a public appearance at Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles over the weekend.
Meghan posted a series of photos on Instagram from their night out, including shots of the couple in cowboy-themed outfits.
Prince Harry wore a green cowboy hat labeled “My Love,” along with the names Lili and Archie and both U.S. and U.K. flags. Meghan wore a denim dress and was later seen wearing Harry’s hat.
The pair were seated in a VIP lounge, where they were photographed enjoying the concert. Beyoncé later shared a photo of them on her website.
Meghan captioned her post: “About last night… Thank you Beyoncé and team for an amazing concert (and a very fun date night) All love.”
While the night appeared to be a fun outing, it revived discussion of their previous encounter with Beyoncé and her husband Jay Z at the 2019 Lion King premiere.
In video footage from that event, Meghan and Harry were seen asking director Jon Favreau about potential voiceover work for Meghan.
Beyoncé appeared to look away awkwardly during the conversation.
Harry also approached then-Disney CEO Bob Iger to mention that Meghan does voiceovers, to which Iger responded, “Ah, I did not know that,” followed by, “We’d love to try.”
The couple also attended Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour in 2023, where Harry appeared disengaged, spending time on his phone.
Meghan, who has remained close with Beyoncé, previously said in their Netflix series that she once received a text from the singer, stating that she admired Meghan’s “bravery and vulnerability.”
The Sussexes continue to attract attention from both celebrity circles and the press, but the tone of that coverage appears to be changing as their influence in the U.S. is increasingly questioned.
