President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that he may attend an upcoming meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled to take place in Turkey later this week.

The announcement follows days of shifting diplomacy and international pressure aimed at securing a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said, “They couldn’t get a meeting because one said ceasefire, one said no ceasefire, it was going back and forth. I said, ‘Look, at this point we gotta stop it. Just go to the meeting. The meeting’s been set. Go to the meeting on Thursday.’ And if I thought it would be helpful — I don’t know where I’m going to be at that particular point, I’ll be someplace in the Middle East — but I would fly there if I thought it would be helpful.”

Zelensky responded positively to Trump’s remarks, writing on X, “I have just heard President Trump’s statement. Very important words. I supported [Trump’s] idea of a full and unconditional ceasefire — long enough to provide the foundation for diplomacy. And we want it, we are ready to uphold silence on our end. I supported President Trump with the idea of direct talks with Putin. I have openly expressed my readiness to meet. I will be in Türkiye. I hope that the Russians will not evade the meeting.”

I supported President Trump…

The announcement of the meeting follows a weekend of diplomatic developments. Both Zelensky and Putin confirmed they would be willing to meet in Turkey on Thursday, after Putin proposed direct talks and Trump publicly urged both sides to commit.

On Saturday, several European Union countries increased pressure on Moscow, threatening “massive” sanctions if the Kremlin did not accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal.

Putin declined the ceasefire but proposed a direct negotiation with Zelensky to be held in Turkey. The proposal was made during a press conference, according to CNN.

Throughout Sunday, Ukrainian allies continued to push for a ceasefire agreement ahead of any meeting.

However, President Trump issued a post on Truth Social later that evening, stating, “President Putin of Russia doesn’t want to have a Cease Fire Agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet on Thursday, in Turkey, to negotiate a possible end to the BLOODBATH. Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY. At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly! I’m starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin, who’s too busy celebrating the Victory of World War ll, which could not have been won (not even close!) without the United States of America. HAVE THE MEETING, NOW!!!”

Shortly after Trump’s post, Zelensky confirmed that he would meet with Putin in Turkey.

“I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses,” Zelensky wrote on X.

We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy. There is no point in prolonging the killings. And I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for…

The planned meeting marks a potentially significant development in efforts to de-escalate the long-running war.

Trump’s potential presence at the negotiations could introduce a new dynamic into the discussions, though it remains unclear whether Russia will fully engage or follow through with the in-person talks.

Neither the Kremlin nor the White House has issued additional statements on whether Putin or Trump will attend in person.

Turkish officials have not commented publicly on the meeting logistics.

The Thursday summit in Turkey is now expected to draw global attention as diplomatic efforts continue to find a resolution to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
