Democrat Morale Collapses as Trump’s Return Sends Them into Freefall: New Poll

A new poll reveals a sharp decline in optimism among Democrats about the future of their party, as President Donald Trump’s return to the White House and continued policy momentum have strengthened Republican confidence heading into the next political cycle.

According to a survey conducted by the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, just 35 percent of Democrats say they are “very or somewhat” optimistic about the Democratic Party’s future.

That number marks a significant drop from July 2024, when 57 percent of Democrats expressed optimism — a decline of over 20 percentage points in less than a year.

The poll, conducted between May 1 and May 5 among 1,175 U.S. adults, shows that 36 percent of Democrats are now “very or somewhat” pessimistic about their party’s future, while another 29 percent say they are neither optimistic nor pessimistic.

The data suggests that the Democratic Party is facing internal uncertainty and morale issues in the wake of President Trump’s sweeping return to power in the 2024 election, which reshaped the national political landscape.

The findings come amid continued concerns among Democratic voters about the party’s direction, leadership, and ability to counter the momentum behind the Trump administration.

In contrast, Republican voters are reporting stronger confidence in their party’s future.

The survey shows that 55 percent of Republicans are “very or somewhat” optimistic about the direction of the GOP — a noticeable increase from the 47 percent who said the same in July 2024.

Only 21 percent of Republicans reported being pessimistic, and 24 percent said they were neither.

Overall, the American public appears more pessimistic than hopeful about the Democratic Party’s path forward.

Only 17 percent of all U.S. adults surveyed expressed optimism about the future of the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, 49 percent said they were pessimistic, and 33 percent reported a neutral stance.

The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus four percentage points.

These findings reflect a broader shift in voter attitudes following President Trump’s victory in the 2024 election and the subsequent execution of key administration priorities.

Trump’s policy focus on the economy, border security, and foreign affairs has bolstered his support among Republicans and independents, further deepening challenges for Democrats attempting to regroup.

While the Democratic National Committee has yet to publicly respond to the poll results, the figures underscore the party’s ongoing struggle to unify its base and chart a course that resonates with voters amid rising GOP momentum.

The AP/NORC data presents a stark contrast between the current moods of the two major political parties.

With Republicans expressing growing confidence and Democrats confronting declining enthusiasm, the divide signals a significant recalibration of political energy less than a year after President Trump’s return to office.
