Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing criticism from a constituent who says the congresswoman abruptly left a Bronx town hall after being asked a question about rising crime and deteriorating conditions in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Guadelupe Alvarez, a resident in Ocasio-Cortez’s district, appeared on Fox & Friends Sunday to recount her experience at the event, claiming she was dismissed mid-question and never received a response.

“I went to one of the town halls where she was speaking in the Bronx, I believe, and when I asked the question of what are you doing for Jackson Heights? How are you aware of the crime and prostitution? Have you seen the neighborhood lately? She dismissed me,” Alvarez said.

“She said she’d be right back and never came back and just handed the floor to her assistant, which was really infuriating.”

Alvarez also said that the town hall appeared scripted, with attendees receiving pre-written questions that limited meaningful community engagement.

“Not only that, we were given questions written by them,” she said.

“So it’s like our concerns weren’t really addressed until, like, someone had to speak up, and I had to be that person, and she still does nothing. So, we aren’t being heard, no matter how much we go out there. There’s no accountability on her part.”

The incident comes as Democratic Party leaders have launched a post-election outreach effort through a series of “People’s Town Halls” across the country.

The initiative is aimed at rebuilding support after the party lost ground in the 2024 elections.

Ocasio-Cortez has been part of that effort and recently joined Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on a national tour called “Fighting Oligarchy.”

However, while Ocasio-Cortez travels to promote national policy platforms, crime in her own congressional district — which covers parts of Queens and the Bronx — has escalated sharply.

According to New York Police Department data, violent crime in the district has increased by 70% since she took office.

In Queens’ 110th precinct, which includes Jackson Heights, major crime is up by over 100%.

The congresswoman’s approach to immigration enforcement has also attracted criticism.

Earlier this year, Ocasio-Cortez confronted border czar Tom Homan during a town hall event in Jackson Heights, challenging him on federal immigration policies.

She later hosted a virtual session titled “Know Your Rights With ICE,” where she provided guidance to illegal migrants on how to respond to immigration officers during home and workplace visits.

Her actions drew the attention of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who said on Fox News that it would be “entirely appropriate” for the Department of Justice to investigate the congresswoman’s comments.

As the Democratic Party continues its post-election strategy to reconnect with voters, some constituents say their voices are still being ignored — particularly on issues of public safety and community quality of life.
