Two police officers in Piscataway, New Jersey, are being recognized for their swift and courageous actions after rescuing an impaired driver trapped inside a vehicle stopped on active railroad tracks just seconds before it was struck by a speeding train, as reported by Fox News.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on May 12 along New Brunswick Avenue.

Phoenix police officers block McDowell Road as the department said two officers were injured after an officer involved shooting near 16th Street and McDowell Road on Sept. 3, 2024.

Dashcam footage from a police cruiser captured the entire event, showing the officers, identified as Devin Hinchcliffe and John Ward of the Piscataway Township Police Department, acting quickly to save the driver’s life.

According to the footage and police radio communications, officers arrived at the scene as railroad crossing gates were lowering and warning lights and bells were activated. “We’re dragging him out of the car. The car is stuck,” one officer can be heard saying over the radio.

As the train horn sounded, signaling its rapid approach, the officers continued to struggle to extract the driver from the vehicle, which appeared to be a Tesla.

Just seconds after the officers succeeded in pulling the man to safety, the train barreled through the intersection, slamming into the now-empty car.

Screams can be heard in the background of the video, although it is unclear who they came from. The driver appeared disoriented and was reportedly unable to follow verbal instructions due to his impaired condition, according to police.

The Piscataway Township Police Department posted a statement on Facebook praising the officers’ actions: “Recognizing the imminent danger posed by an approaching train, the officers swiftly and safely removed the driver just seconds before impact.”

The department added:

“Their professionalism and quick decision-making undoubtedly prevented a tragedy. Excellent job!”

The cause of the vehicle being stuck on the tracks remains under investigation. Authorities have not released further details about the driver’s condition or the nature of his impairment.

The video quickly circulated online, where members of the public commended the officers’ bravery. One Facebook user commented, “This is amazing. God bless them. They do not get paid enough.”

Another wrote, “Thank you for always putting your life on the line to protect someone else’s and trying to keep the community safe. #BACKTHEBLUE.”

The incident took place just days before another New Jersey emergency, in which a dump truck driver experiencing a medical emergency crashed into a residence.
