The FBI has launched an investigation into allegations of targeted violence against religious groups following an incident in Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park on Sunday.

The investigation was announced Tuesday by FBI spokesperson Dan Bongino after a Christian group, Mayday USA, was attacked during a permitted concert that drew counter-protesters affiliated with Antifa.

“We have asked our team to fully investigate allegations of targeted violence against religious groups at the Seattle concert. Freedom of religion isn’t a suggestion,” Bongino said in a public statement.

Mayday USA had received official permits to hold its concert at Cal Anderson Park, located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.

The group describes itself as a Christian organization focused on faith-based outreach and advocacy.

However, the event quickly turned chaotic when counter-protesters, many wearing Antifa-affiliated symbols and colors, arrived at the park and began confronting attendees.

The situation escalated into physical altercations, and the Seattle Police Department confirmed that 23 individuals were arrested in connection with the violence.

Those arrested were reportedly part of the counter-protesting groups that initiated confrontations with the event’s attendees.

Following the incident, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell issued a statement condemning Mayday USA, labeling the group “far-right” and criticizing the location of the event.

Harrell said the rally was intentionally held “to provoke a reaction by promoting beliefs that are inherently opposed to our city’s values in the heart of Seattle’s most prominent LGBTQ+ neighborhood.”

“When the humanity of trans people and those who have been historically marginalized is questioned, we triumph by demonstrating our values through our words and peaceful protest,” Harrell stated.

“We lose our voice when this is disrupted by violence, chaos, and confusion.”

Harrell’s remarks drew criticism and prompted calls for his resignation, with critics alleging that the mayor had misrepresented the situation and wrongly blamed the group that was attacked.

In response, members of Mayday USA held a protest outside City Hall on Tuesday, demanding accountability.

That demonstration drew a renewed counter-protest from Antifa-aligned and trans rights activists, once again heightening tensions in the city.

Further complicating matters, documents and communications obtained after the incident revealed that city officials had themselves suggested Cal Anderson Park as the venue for the Mayday USA event.

According to sources involved in the planning process, the group initially proposed holding their event on Pike Street near the well-known Pike Place Market.

However, city representatives reportedly advised event organizers to consider “other Seattle Parks locations,” with Cal Anderson Park named specifically as a recommendation.

The revelation appears to contradict Mayor Harrell’s public condemnation of the group’s choice of location.

Harrell claimed the event’s placement was a deliberate affront to the “LGBTQ+ communities” and “trans neighbors.”

However, the Christian group now says it was merely following city guidance on venue selection.

The FBI’s investigation will focus on whether federal laws protecting religious freedom were violated during the violence on Sunday.

According to federal statutes, hate crimes targeting individuals or groups based on religious belief are prosecutable offenses.

As of Wednesday, no federal charges have been filed, and the identities of those arrested by local law enforcement have not been released.

The Seattle Police Department confirmed that it is cooperating with federal authorities in the ongoing investigation.
