Bodycam footage released by Arizona authorities shows Goodyear Police Officer Dakota Berry rescuing a young woman from a burning vehicle following a serious crash early Sunday morning, as reported by The New York Post.

The woman, later identified as the daughter of Goodyear Fire Captain Simeon Cheatham, was trapped inside her car and screaming for help as flames surrounded her.

The incident took place on an interstate near Goodyear, Arizona. Officer Berry was returning to the city when he encountered the scene of a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. According to police, Berry heard the horn blaring and immediately ran to investigate.

“I stumbled across a vehicle fire on the way back to the city. Ended up hearing a car horn honking and immediately ran over to the driver’s side. At that time, I realized someone was alive inside of the vehicle,” Berry said during a press briefing.

Berry’s bodycam recorded the intense rescue. In the video, he can be seen sprinting toward the vehicle as the victim, Asharie Cheatham, screams, “Help me!” from inside.

Berry broke the window and pulled her out by her feet. Flames had already spread inside the vehicle, and Berry used a fire extinguisher to put out flames in the woman’s hair.

“No matter what, I would’ve got them out. I wouldn’t let them stay in,” the officer said.

Cheatham was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and is expected to survive. Officer Berry was also hospitalized with burns to his hands sustained during the rescue.

Authorities say three other individuals, believed to be in the second vehicle involved in the crash, were also hospitalized.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Watch the graphic video below:

Captain Simeon Cheatham released a statement praising his daughter’s strength and expressing gratitude for the overwhelming community support.

“She is a remarkable young woman; courageous, determined and full of life,” he said. “Even in the face of unimaginable pain and challenge, her resilience shines through.”

“This road will not be easy, but she has never backed down from adversity,” Cheatham added. “With the continued outpouring of support from our community and with God’s grace, I have no doubt she will rise from this stronger than before.”
