The directive is part of an ongoing effort to expand deportation operations nationwide.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller confirmed the new goal during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, calling it a temporary benchmark that would continue to rise under President Trump’s leadership.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are looking to set a goal of a minimum of 3,000 arrests for ICE every day,” Miller said.

Tom Homan, who serves as Trump’s border czar, supported the move on Thursday morning, saying that more needs to be done to meet the administration’s immigration enforcement priorities.

“We’ve gotta increase these arrests and removals,” Homan said.

“The numbers are good, but I’m not satisfied. I haven’t been satisfied all year long.”

During the first 100 days of President Trump’s current term, ICE arrested 66,463 individuals who were in the country illegally.

More than 65,000 deportations were carried out during the same period, with approximately 17,000 of those involving individuals with criminal convictions or pending charges.

Offenses ranged from driving under the influence to assault and weapons violations.

ICE also reported the removal of individuals involved in gang activity and serious crimes, including homicide and sexual offenses.

The administration’s efforts have not gone without legal opposition. Some deportations, including transfers to El Salvador under the wartime Illegal Aliens Act, have drawn criticism and prompted legal challenges.

Critics argue that certain deportation practices have limited or no legal recourse for those targeted, particularly when migrants are relocated to third-party countries with little warning or legal notice.

In April alone, ICE deported 17,200 individuals, a significant increase from April 2024, when deportations under the Biden-Harris administration totaled about 13,000.

Despite the progress, the current pace remains short of Trump’s campaign pledge to remove as many as 20 million illegal immigrants and conduct what he called “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

Sources inside the administration have indicated that Trump has expressed frustration with the pace of enforcement, particularly regarding the difficulty in locating high-priority targets with criminal backgrounds.

To accelerate enforcement, Department of Homeland Security officials have recently begun increasing arrest operations in coordination with immigration courts.

According to three immigration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, government attorneys were instructed last week to dismiss certain cases upon arrival at court.

Once a judge dismissed the case, ICE agents were positioned outside the courthouse to detain the individuals immediately after their release.

This strategy has been implemented across multiple jurisdictions, including New York and Seattle, and reportedly affects migrants without criminal records, those without legal counsel, and individuals currently seeking asylum.

The American Immigration Lawyers Association reported that migrants arriving to defend their cases in court were unaware that dismissal by the court could result in immediate detention by ICE agents waiting outside.

The Trump administration maintains that its enforcement strategy is focused on restoring the rule of law and fulfilling the president’s commitment to securing the U.S. border and reducing illegal immigration.

The White House has not announced a timeline for achieving the 3,000 daily arrest target but indicated that operations will continue to intensify in the coming months.
