Former White House advisor Steve Bannon pushed back Thursday against commentary made on MSNBC that described President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement plans as a form of “mass incarceration.”

Bannon strongly rejected the characterization and defended the Trump administration’s record on criminal justice reform and immigration policy.

The exchange was sparked by remarks made during MSNBC’s Katy Tur Reports by political commentator Emma Vigeland.

Trump’s Sovereign Wealth Fund: What Could It Mean For Your Money?

During the broadcast, Vigeland claimed that Trump had abandoned his “drain the swamp” message, aligned himself with Washington insiders, and implemented criminal justice policies that amounted to a system of mass incarceration.

She also accused him of using the justice system to reward political allies.

Responding on his own program War Room, Bannon called the accusations false and said the First Step Act, signed into law by Trump in 2018, was one of the most significant reforms in criminal justice in decades.

“She’s a bald-faced liar,” Bannon said. “Nobody has done more on prison reform and worked with prisoners and is more anti-mass incarceration.”

Bannon also referenced a statement he released during his own time in prison, saying he drew inspiration from fellow inmates.

“On September 26… I put the only statement I think I ever put out in prison about the coming victory over Kamala Harris,” Bannon said.

“You know where I got that from? The prisoners. Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party and that young lady right there, they represent mass incarcerations.”

He emphasized that deportation of illegal immigrants is not the same as imprisonment.

“What he’s doing with illegal aliens is not mass incarceration. That’s deportation of people that have no due process rights and are going to get the hell out of this country,” Bannon said.

“President Trump, the First Step Act — ask the prisoners, ma’am, have you interviewed the prisoners?”

The First Step Act, a bipartisan bill signed by President Trump, was aimed at reforming sentencing laws, expanding rehabilitation programs, and reducing recidivism.

It received support from across the political spectrum.

Bannon continued, stating that Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda is focused on large-scale deportation, not incarceration.

“What President Trump wants is mass deportation of illegal aliens, and they’re going to get mass deported,” he said.

“It’s for you to sit there and Katie Turner, now for you to correct that bald-faced lie, and that was a bald-faced lie.”

Bannon also criticized MSNBC as a network, accusing it of misleading viewers and losing relevance.

“This is how corrupt MSNBC is. This is why it’s becoming more and more irrelevant,” Bannon said.

“This is why African American men are voting for President Trump and the MAGA movement in record numbers. This is why the Hispanic community is coming to President Trump and the MAGA movement in record numbers.”

Bannon’s remarks follow renewed attention to President Trump’s immigration platform, which includes completing the border wall, ending birthright citizenship, and launching what he has called the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.

Trump has pledged to declare a national emergency and use military resources to enforce immigration law.

His policy proposals include expedited removal of illegal immigrants, ending catch-and-release policies, and cracking down on sanctuary jurisdictions.

The hearing and media response surrounding Trump’s immigration plans come as debate over the scope of federal immigration enforcement continues to draw political and legal attention across the country.
