House Majority Forward (HMF), a nonprofit aligned with House Democratic leadership, launched a new ad campaign this week targeting 26 House Republicans over their support for President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The ads claim the tariffs are responsible for causing consumer prices to “soar,” but recent economic data paints a different picture, suggesting inflation is easing and wages are outpacing price increases.

“There’s one person who thinks everything in your life should cost more… It’s your Congressman… He backed the tariffs causing prices to soar,” one HMF ad states.

The campaign focuses on Republican lawmakers who have supported the president’s tariff policies, specifically the “Liberation Day” tariffs enacted in April.

However, multiple key economic indicators released this month show that inflation has slowed significantly.

According to the Commerce Department, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index—used by the Federal Reserve as its primary inflation gauge—rose only 0.1% in April and stands at 2.1% year-over-year, its lowest level since February 2021.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) also showed a modest 0.2% increase for April, with the annual rate at 2.3%, marking the slowest inflation in more than four years.

Meanwhile, Americans saw personal incomes rise by 0.8% for the month—far exceeding expectations.

CNBC: Personal income increased 0.8% in April — “almost TRIPLE the expectations.” 🔥

Grocery prices fell by the largest margin since September 2020, led by a steep drop in egg prices, which was the larget drop in about four decades.

🚨 UPDATE: Egg prices have now declined 62% since President Trump’s inauguration day.

They were $6.55. They are now $2.52 per dozen.

EJ Antoni, chief economist at the Heritage Foundation, disputed the claims made in the HMF ads.

“President Trump was handed worsening inflation, and he brought it back down in just a few months,” Antoni told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“The claim that prices are soaring is empirically false by any measure.”

Antoni did note that if the U.S. were to engage in a prolonged trade war with China and increase tariffs further, it could eventually drive up prices.

But he emphasized that such a scenario has not yet occurred.

U.S. consumer confidence also showed a strong rebound in May, ending a five-month slide, according to a report from The Conference Board.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella responded to the ad campaign, saying, “While the left cries wolf, prices continue to fall, and the economy is booming under President Trump and Republicans in Congress. It’s clear House Democrats have no message other than pathetic fear-mongering and distractions for their failures.”

The new ad push comes amid other disputed claims from Democratic leaders regarding President Trump’s legislative agenda, including recent attempts to criticize Republican Medicaid reforms included in a broader tax and spending bill.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said at a press conference on May 15 that the Republican-backed bill would cut off healthcare access to 13.7 million Americans.

“Republicans are trying to jam this reckless budget down the throats of the American people, take away healthcare from approximately 14 million Americans including by undermining parts of the Affordable Care Act and enacting the largest Medicaid cut in American history,” Jeffries said.

However, The New York Times fact-checked Jeffries’ claim and found it to be “an exaggeration.

” The figure cited by Democrats includes nearly four million people expected to lose Medicaid coverage due to the expiration of a COVID-era policy unrelated to the legislation in question.

Additionally, the House bill would remove approximately 1.4 million illegal immigrants currently receiving Medicaid coverage through state programs and would also impact able-bodied, childless adults who fail to meet new work or volunteer requirements of at least 20 hours per week.

Republican lawmakers have defended the reforms, arguing that the changes will reduce fraud and abuse in the system while preserving Medicaid for vulnerable populations.

In March, HMF also funded a billboard campaign claiming certain House Republicans had voted to cut Medicaid.

Those claims were similarly criticized as inaccurate, with the text of the legislation in question making no reference to specific Medicaid cuts.

Several of the billboards were later taken down following a cease-and-desist letter issued by the House Republicans’ campaign committee.

Despite recent messaging efforts by HMF and House Democrats, current economic trends suggest that inflation is declining, wages are rising, and consumer confidence is rebounding—all under policies implemented during President Trump’s current term.
