DeSantis Blasts SCOTUS Over Snopes Denial

The Snopes case was our best shot, as of right now, to end assault weapon bans across the nation once and for all. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court punted it down the road. They apparently didn’t want to take on another controversial case, which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, considering it’s not like they have to worry about reelection or anything.

Still, the decision has been made, and we’re stuck with it for at least another term or two (according to Justice Brett Kavanaugh).

We don’t have to like it, though. In fact, we shouldn’t like it. We should make our displeasure known, because if the Supreme Court is going to succumb to pressure like that, then we might as well exert some of our own.

And that’s what Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is doing.

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) responded to the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear a challenge to Maryland’s “assault weapons” ban by claiming the court is more concerned with “bailing out illegal aliens” than protecting the rights of Americans.

…

DeSantis likewise lambasted the majority’s decision, posting to X: “The Court has more urgency in bailing out illegal aliens than in upholding the rights of Americans — even in regards to an enumerated right in the Constitution.”

I mean, he’s got a point.

They can involve themselves in immigration disputes, siding with those who entered the country illegally, but can’t be bothered to stand up for our right to keep and bear arms?

The Bruen decision was a massive win for gun rights, or so we thought at the time, but if the Court won’t actually enforce it, then what good did that decision actually do?

Words on a page are just that, without something backing them. As it stands, the Supreme Court has done nothing to uphold its own decision. Instead, they watered it down with Rahimi and have largely avoided the issue since.

Our rights are constantly under assault, and the Supreme Court kicked it down the road, saying they’ll take it up in the next term or two. Frankly, I’ll believe that when I see it.

DeSantis is righteous in his outrage, and he’s absolutely correct.

This Supreme Court was supposed to be a godsend. Instead, since Bruen, it’s been a major disappointment. What difference does having the Court make if you don’t actually have the Court? If they’ll hear cases on illegal immigrants and trip over themselves for those folks, but ignore actual American citizens and their constitutionally protected rights, then what good is really being done?

At best, we can hope for it to play defense, but we were supposed to get more than that.

DeSantis said pretty much what’s in my mind on the topic.

Of course, I’ve said how disappointing I’m finding this Court to actually be. Justice Clarence Thomas is awesome, of course, and Justice Samuel Alito is as well. But Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett haven’t been the benefit we all hoped they’d be.

If the Court hears an assault weapon ban next term and overturns them all, great.

Until then, I’m taking a “I’ll believe it when I see it” kind of outlook. While I’m willing to take any win that moves the needle toward liberty, we actually need those wins to happen.
