The Trump administration announced the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles following several days of escalating violence targeting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and federal law enforcement officers.

The decision was revealed in a post by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on X, where she stated that President Donald Trump had signed a Presidential Memorandum authorizing the deployment in response to what she described as unchecked criminal activity.

“In recent days, violent mobs have attacked ICE officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles, California,” Leavitt posted.

“These operations are essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States.”

Leavitt emphasized that the administration maintains a zero tolerance policy toward criminal acts, particularly those that target law enforcement officials.

“That is why President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester,” she wrote.

“The Trump Administration has a zero tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when that violence is aimed at law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs. These criminals will be arrested and swiftly brought to justice. The Commander-in-Chief will ensure the laws of the United States are executed fully and completely.”

Leavitt also directly criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, stating they had “completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens.”

Governor Newsom responded on X, condemning the federal intervention and accusing the Trump administration of escalating the situation unnecessarily.

“The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers,” Newsom wrote.

“That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.”

“LA authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice,” he continued.

“We are in close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need. The Guard has been admirably serving LA throughout recovery. This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.”

On Friday, ICE agents carried out multiple immigration raids across the area, which led to over 40 arrests.

According to officials, those actions included executing four search warrants—one near a Home Depot and two at Ambience Apparel office locations.

The tension further escalated on Saturday when videos circulated online showing demonstrators in Paramount, located in Los Angeles County, throwing rocks and other objects at Border Patrol vehicles.

The Trump administration’s move marks one of the most significant federal responses to immigration-related unrest in California in recent years.

While local officials have maintained that they have the situation under control, the White House has expressed concern over what it describes as growing lawlessness directed at federal personnel carrying out lawful duties.

The National Guard deployment is expected to proceed immediately under the authority of the Presidential Memorandum.

No timeline for how long the troops will remain in Los Angeles has been provided.
