Federal officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, are defending a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids carried out in Los Angeles, following criticism from Democratic lawmakers and protests from activists.

The ICE operations led to multiple arrests across the city, including that of a local labor union president, prompting backlash from city leaders and members of Congress.

Demonstrators opposed to the arrests gathered outside a federal building in Los Angeles, where the protest escalated and turned confrontational.

According to the Assistant Secretary Dept. of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, more than 800 individuals breached the initial perimeter of the federal facility and vandalized government and private vehicles with spray paint.

In response, Bongino issued a statement on X, saying the agency is investigating the incident and will not tolerate violence directed at federal personnel.

“The Right to assemble and protest does not include a license to attack law enforcement officers, or to impede and obstruct our lawful immigration operations,” Bongino wrote.

“The days of chaos ruling the streets are over. Either obey the law, or go to jail, there’s no third option.”

FBI Director Kash Patel responded directly to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass after she publicly denounced the raids, saying she was “deeply angered” by the enforcement actions and that her office was in coordination with immigrant rights organizations.

Patel quote-posted Bass’s message and simply wrote, “We will,” signaling the federal government’s intent to continue enforcement actions.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller also addressed the mayor’s remarks, stating on X, “You have no say in this at all. Federal law is supreme and federal law will be enforced.”

Democratic lawmakers expressed concern about conditions at detention centers and the legal status of those arrested.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) said many of the detainees were lawful asylum seekers and warned that they could be held indefinitely.

“Overcrowding is so bad that women and children are being forced to sleep outside in tents. Meanwhile, the lights in the building shut off at 5pm. Families are sitting in pitch black,” Gomez said in a statement.

He continued, “According to attorneys on site, ICE claims it can detain people indefinitely even if they have a legal stay. That means even if a court says they can’t be deported, ICE keeps them locked up anyway.”

On Saturday, Gomez and fellow California Democrats—Reps. Norma Torres, Lou Correa, and Luz Rivas—visited a detention facility in downtown Los Angeles seeking information about the individuals being held and the conditions inside.

Despite the protests and statements from Democratic officials, DHS has indicated that enforcement actions will continue.
